The Sales Engineer role is for an engineer who blends technical expertise with real-world application and customer impact. This position supports design/build and publicly bid projects by delivering accurate pricing, innovative design solutions, and expert guidance to both internal teams and customers. The Sales Engineer will collaborate closely with Sales, Estimating, and Builders, applying knowledge of structural systems, materials, and construction methods to develop cost-effective, code-compliant solutions that drive successful project outcomes.

Requirements

  • Strong foundation in structural design, materials, and construction methods
  • Experience with metal building systems (PEMB) and design applications
  • Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and technical documents
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on practical, cost-effective solutions
  • Excellent communication skills to translate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and quality
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work across multiple teams
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering required (for Sales Engineer II and III)
  • 4+ years of metal building design experience or related field (for Sales Engineer II)
  • Advanced knowledge of PEMB systems and design considerations (for Sales Engineer II)
  • Ability to mentor junior engineers and estimators (for Sales Engineer II)
  • Experience supporting Requests for Building Modifications (RBMs) (for Sales Engineer II)
  • Comfortable representing engineering in customer and sales discussions (for Sales Engineer II)
  • 10+ years of metal building design experience or related field (for Sales Engineer III)
  • Deep expertise in PEMB design and estimating applications (for Sales Engineer III)
  • Ability to lead technical discussions and support estimating teams (for Sales Engineer III)
  • Provides guidance in the absence of the Estimating Manager (for Sales Engineer III)
  • Acts as a technical resource across the broader engineering organization (for Sales Engineer III)

Nice To Haves

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) preferred (for Sales Engineer II)

Responsibilities

  • Develop Accurate Designs & Estimates: Prepare calculations, layouts, and engineering details from contract drawings, specifications, and addendums using in-house and supplemental design tools
  • Support Sales & Estimating Teams: Provide technical guidance on complex framing conditions, non-standard geometries, and advanced design considerations
  • Ensure Code Compliance & Quality: Deliver designs that meet applicable codes, manufacturing capabilities, and company standards
  • Drive Value Engineering: Evaluate customer-provided information and recommend cost-effective, optimized design solutions
  • Clarify Scope & Reduce Risk: Identify discrepancies, missing information, and exclusions—ensuring quotes are accurate and well-qualified
  • Leverage Current Pricing: Utilize the most up-to-date pricing data to ensure accurate and competitive estimates
  • Build Strong Relationships: Partner with Builders, Vendors, and internal teams to support successful project execution
  • Train & Educate: Provide guidance and training to Builders and Field Sales on design tools and best practices
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work closely with Sales, Customer Service, Estimating, and Engineering to align on scope and design intent
  • Review & Validate Work: Perform and/or check complex estimates to ensure accuracy and consistency
  • Continuously Improve: Enhance productivity, accuracy, and technical capabilities while expanding your engineering expertise
