About The Position

The Safety Specialist provides Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) support for a nuclear program involving advanced manufacturing and inspection operations. The incumbent works closely with shop-floor personnel, engineering, quality, and management to ensure that machinery, equipment, and manufacturing processes are executed safely and in compliance with applicable regulations and site requirements. This position emphasizes active field engagement and practical safety solutions in a production environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related discipline; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Experience supporting safety programs in manufacturing, industrial, or production environments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of hazards associated with machines, tooling, mechanical systems, and inspection equipment.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and other applicable safety and health regulations.
  • Ability to interpret and apply safety requirements to real-world shop-floor operations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working directly on or around manufacturing shop floors, production equipment, and inspection operations.
  • Familiarity with machine safety, guarding standards, ergonomics, and process safety.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with operators, inspectors, maintenance personnel, and engineers.
  • Strong field presence with sound judgment and a practical, solutions-oriented approach to safety.
  • United States Citizenship
  • Active Q Clearance (preferred) or ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance

  • Experience in nuclear, aerospace, defense, or other safety-critical industries.

Responsibilities

  • Provide safety oversight and support for shop-floor manufacturing, assembly, testing, and inspection activities.
  • Identify hazards associated with machinery, tools, material handling, rotating equipment, and industrial processes; recommend and implement effective controls.
  • Participate in work planning, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and pre-job briefings for manufacturing and inspection tasks.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections and walkthroughs of production areas, equipment installations, and inspection stations.
  • Review and approve procedures, work instructions, and equipment changes to ensure safety requirements are addressed.
  • Support machine guarding, lockout/tagout, confined space, electrical safety, and industrial hygiene programs as applicable.
  • Investigate incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions; perform root-cause analysis and track corrective actions to closure.
  • Provide real-time safety guidance to operators, inspectors, and engineers during production and troubleshooting activities.
  • Support environmental compliance activities related to chemicals, waste handling, and spill prevention.
  • Deliver safety training and promote a strong safety culture across manufacturing and inspection teams.
  • Interface with regulatory agencies, auditors, and internal oversight organizations as required.
