About The Position

The Safety Specialist at Mid-Continent Public Library plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of library branches. This position involves responding to incidents, training staff on safety protocols, and implementing proactive measures to reduce risks. The Safety Specialist collaborates with the Safety Director and Associate Safety Director to enhance safety awareness and provide necessary training in areas such as situational awareness and incident reporting.

Requirements

• Associate's degree in a related field (required).
• Bachelor's degree in a related field (preferred).
• 2 years of Safety/Security operations experience (preferred).
• Non-violent confrontational training (preferred).
• First aid and disaster response training (preferred).
• Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams.
• Ability to communicate effectively with management, co-workers, and the public.
• Intermediate knowledge of verbal de-escalation techniques.
• Basic knowledge of conducting investigations and applicable Missouri State Statutes.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with CCTV security camera systems and operations.
• Knowledge of library policies regarding customer privacy and video recordings.
• Ability to adapt to changing deadlines and workflows.

Responsibilities

• Assist with responding to active incidents in the library system.
• Work with staff to provide reasonable responses to safety issues within branches.
• Promote critical thinking by assessing incident reports from branches.
• Provide training for staff in identified areas of deficiency.
• Utilize CCTV software to process digital footage from security cameras.
• Maintain and provide security keycards for staff as needed.
• Monitor and track AED units for compliance and order replacements as necessary.
• Attend meetings as assigned by the Safety Director or Associate Safety Director.
• Maintain and update the Safety department's intranet page.
