About The Position

The Safety Representative at Austal USA plays a crucial role in ensuring compliance with safety policies and regulations. This position involves working closely with employees to address safety issues and assist with various safety and risk/accident prevention concerns. The representative will conduct site and equipment inspections, assist in accident investigations, and perform safety surveys to evaluate occupational health and safety conditions. Responsibilities also include providing first response medical assistance, conducting monthly inspections, and recommending corrective actions for safety violations. The role requires collaboration with other safety personnel and adherence to company policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • One (1) to three (3) years of related EHS experience or a combination of education and experience.
  • Prior military, police, or professional fire service experience may be considered in lieu of education.
  • Demonstrated skills in health, safety, and environmental standards and practices.
  • Basic OSHA safety training certifications in 29 CFR 1915, 1910, or 1926.
  • Desire and ability to complete OSHA and NFPA training for marine competent person recognition.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with employees at all levels within the organization.
  • Willingness and ability to work in close and confined spaces.
  • Ability to remain calm and in control when faced with confrontational situations.
  • Beginner level or higher PC skills in Microsoft Office and Adobe products.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the HS&E Department in ensuring compliance with Austal Safety Policies and regulations.
  • Work with employees on safety issues and provide assistance on safety and risk/accident prevention concerns.
  • Perform site and equipment inspections and assist in accident investigations.
  • Conduct safety surveys to identify and evaluate occupational health, safety, and environmental conditions.
  • Perform comprehensive on-site inspections to audit physical conditions and safe work practices.
  • Recommend corrective actions for temporary work stoppages or closings of areas.
  • Provide first response medical assistance until the arrival of the Austal medical team.
  • Calibrate, use, and interpret air monitoring equipment.
  • Conduct monthly inspection programs and complete necessary paperwork.
  • Extinguish live fires at the incipient stage and respond to small hazardous materials spills.
  • Work with safety personnel, supervisors, and managers.
  • Conduct health, safety, and environmental workplace investigations.
