About The Position

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features. Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.. The Role Responsible for integrating Upper Interior Head Impact Protection (FMVSS 201U) enablers and strategy into the upper vehicle structure and upper interior hard trim and overhead system for GM Programs. This engineer will lead engineering projects by demonstrating initiative, creativity, independent judgment, and project management throughout the vehicle development process, and will provide technical direction while working with multiple functional groups (Interiors – Uppers and RRAB, Body – Upper and Closures, Electrical, Interior Design Studio, Interior Design).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an (ABET) accredited University: Mechanical, Chemical, Biomechanics, Aero, Civil, Materials, Applied Physics.
  • 3+ years indirect experience with Upper Interior Head Impact (FMVSS 201U) Performance in an adjacent area exposed to FMVSS 201U (Interior Trim, RRAB, Interior VDDV, Upper Body Structure, Body Closures, Validation, Safety Occupant Performance)
  • Knowledge of engineering theory and application in automotive development
  • Willingness to learn new skills and adapt expeditiously
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others
  • High level of analytical ability to solve challenging problems and to integrate complex systems
  • Exercise independent judgment and creative solution development with minimal direction from leadership
  • Knowledge of statistical and optimization tools and techniques
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree or PhD in Engineering from an (ABET) accredited University: Mechanical, Biomechanics, Aero, Civil, Materials, Applied Physics.
  • 1+ years direct experience with Upper Interior Head Impact (FMVSS 201U) Performance or Safety Occupant Performance
  • Working knowledge of CAE and Validation tools – training available in LS-DYNA, PRIMER, METAPOST, ANSA, HYPERWORKS, STIS and other CAE tools
  • Knowledge of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and Global Safety Requirements and Standards – training available
  • Working knowledge of Unigraphics, TeamCenter, and VisMockup
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and performance integration related applications

Responsibilities

  • Understand and apply GM Safety CAE standard work procedures for delivering quality models and simulation results using LS-DYNA software.
  • Utilize GM Safety Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) standard work procedures for all simulations and ensure high quality models
  • Maintain criteria for section development post-VPI (or Initial Surface Direction). Continuously ensure best practices are implemented ahead of CAE analysis results
  • Use CAE tools to lead the Upper Interior and upper structure/closures design for Upper Interior Head Impact performance.
  • Generate feasible and timely vehicle design recommendations and technical solutions to meet Upper Interior Head Impact performance targets for the vehicle program with other performance requirements.
  • Communicate information to internal and external customer organizations.
  • Work with engineering functions, program teams, suppliers, manufacturing, and others to implement design changes as required to achieve vehicle performance.
  • Use advanced CAE tools and methods (Variation Study/DOE/DFSS/MDO) to optimize performance
  • Plan, prepare, execute and analyze post-test results for testing at the Vehicle Proving Grounds.
  • Interpret measurements, conduct analysis, and compare CAE to test results. Effectively communicate results and proactively collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve issues and verify solutions.
  • Work with global teams in a collaborative environment.
  • Present performance status at appropriate forums on regular basis (201U-QIT, Safety PIT, PDT, CIT)
  • Support proper use Auros and PRTS systems for issue resolution
  • Demonstrate GM Core Values and Behaviors
