About The Position

Boston Ship Repair performs large, fast-turn ship repair projects for commercial and government customers. Our teams work around the clock to deliver safe, high-quality results in a complex, heavy-industrial, union environment. The Safety Manager will develop, implement, and manage company safety and environmental policies, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws. This role will provide leadership in fostering a culture of safety across shipyard operations.

Requirements

  • 5–8+ years in safety leadership within ship repair, shipbuilding, heavy industrial, marine construction, or equivalent high-risk environment.
  • Bachelor’s in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or related field; equivalent experience considered.
  • OSHA 30 (Construction/General Industry acceptable).
  • Shipyard Competent Person (or ability to obtain within 6 months).
  • First Aid/CPR/AED (current or within 60 days).
  • Strong field presence, practical risk assessment, incident investigation, and training delivery.
  • Excellent communication across craft, supervision, and customer representatives.
  • Data-driven with solid documentation habits.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain TWIC.
  • Willingness to work off-shifts/weekends as needed for project schedules.

Responsibilities

  • Own the Safety Management System (SMS): policies, procedures, training, and continuous improvement (aligned to ISO 45001 principles).
  • Ensure shipyard compliance: hot work, confined space, LOTO, fall protection, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, electrical (NFPA 70E), and hazard communication.
  • Plan and conduct risk assessments/JHAs for high-risk work (blasting/painting, tank/void work, work aloft, crane/lifting, energized work).
  • Lead daily field presence: job walk-throughs, audits, and coaching; stop-work authority and rapid response to unsafe conditions.
  • Coordinate confined space and hot-work controls with the Marine Chemist and Shipyard Competent Persons; maintain permits and logs.
  • Investigate incidents and near-misses using root-cause methods; drive corrective and preventive actions and verify effectiveness.
  • Manage industrial hygiene activities (air/noise sampling via internal/third-party resources) and medical surveillance coordination.
  • Develop and deliver safety training and toolbox talks for multi-shift crews; track qualifications and retraining cycles.
  • Maintain OSHA records (300/300A/301) and required reports; support regulatory inspections and customer audits (e.g., NAVSEA Standard Item safety expectations).
  • Partner with union leadership and the joint safety committee; foster participation and fair, consistent accountability.
  • Oversee PPE programs, contractor/subcontractor safety onboarding, and site access controls (e.g., TWIC where applicable).
  • Participate in emergency preparedness: drills, incident command roles, spill response coordination, and severe-weather plans.
  • Support bid reviews and project planning with safety input, staffing, and equipment needs.
