About The Position

The Safety Manager is responsible for leading and administering all occupational safety and health programs at the sawmill facility in compliance with OSHA regulations and applicable state and local requirements. This role focuses on identifying, evaluating, and controlling hazards associated with wood products manufacturing- including saw operations, material handling, mobile equipment, lockout/tagout, machine guarding, combustible dust, and powered industrial trucks. The Safety Manager works closely with mill leadership and employees to ensure regulatory compliance, reduce workplace injuries and incidents, support OSHA inspections and audits, and promote a proactive safety culture that supports safe, efficient sawmill operations.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Safety, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field required OR a minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible safety experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a leadership or supervisory role with responsibility for influencing safety performance and leading initiatives.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of industrial safety practices and principles, including OSHA regulations, accident and incident investigation, root cause analysis, and safety training development and delivery.
  • Strong understanding of environmental, health, and safety compliance requirements applicable to manufacturing operations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, with the ability to prepare reports, analyze data, and develop training and presentation materials.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization, including hourly employees, supervisors, and management.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead by example and promote a positive safety culture through visible leadership, accountability, and employee engagement.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy; dependable, self-motivated, and able to take ownership of assigned programs and projects.
  • Ability to effectively multitask, prioritize responsibilities, and manage multiple safety initiatives simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively as a team player while maintaining a positive, professional attitude.

Nice To Haves

  • experience in wood products or sawmill operations preferred.
  • Knowledge of Industrial Hygiene (IH) principles and monitoring techniques; experience using IH sampling equipment such as air pumps, dosimeters, and calibration devices preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with applicable workplace safety standards and regulations, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements.
  • Advise the mill leadership team on programs and strategies to identify, control, and eliminate chemical, physical, environmental, and biological hazards.
  • Conduct required Industrial Hygiene (IH) sampling, testing, monitoring, and inspections in accordance with regulatory requirements, established intervals, and mandated timelines.
  • Maintain and regularly review emergency response procedures to ensure effectiveness and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure adequate supplies and readiness for safety equipment, first aid kits, and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).
  • Maintain the SDS/MSDS database by ensuring all chemicals on site have current documentation and by reviewing and approving new products prior to introduction in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Develop, update, and deliver safety training for team members, new hires, and contractors.
  • Utilize and manage online, computer-based systems for safety programs, contractor management, and training administration; provide assistance to employees with basic safety-related system inquiries as needed.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of programs designed to increase employee safety awareness and ensure a consistent, mill-wide approach to safety.
  • Ensure all employees receive required OSHA training; manage training systems to maintain current content, evaluate effectiveness of delivery methods, and coordinate external training resources when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of all safety-related training in accordance with regulatory and company requirements.
  • Lead the incident investigation process, including review, follow-up, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
  • Initiate and manage Workers’ Compensation claims, working closely with insurance carriers, physicians, employees, and supervisors to minimize lost time and control medical and claim-related costs.
  • Communicate regularly with the Plant Manager, superintendents, and Human Resources Manager regarding the status of all Workers’ Compensation claims and other safety-related issues.
  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date OSHA 300 Log by recording all OSHA-recordable incidents within required regulatory timeframes.
  • Review all incident reports daily; analyze cases to ensure timely completion of investigations, development of appropriate corrective action plans, and effective follow-through.
  • Establish and maintain data management systems for incident tracking, retention, and trend analysis.
  • Participate in incident investigations and provide annual accident investigation training to line supervisors and superintendents to ensure consistent and effective incident response practices.
  • Demonstrate understanding and application of safety leading indicators to proactively identify and address potential risks.
  • Attend, support, and actively participate in safety-related meetings at the mill and company level.
  • Ensure timely and effective mill-wide and company-wide communication of all safety-related information.
  • Develop, update, and maintain mill Job Safety and Environmental Analyses (JSEAs) and Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs) to support safe work practices.
  • Maintain and update mill lockout/tagout procedures, ensuring proper posting, communication, and employee understanding of requirements.
  • Support and promote the SLAM (Stop, Look, Assess, Manage) process for identifying and assessing workplace hazards.
  • Ensure change analysis is completed for mill projects to evaluate safety impacts prior to implementation.
