About The Position

The Safety Management Trainee Intern is a hands‑on, on‑site internship designed for a student interested in manufacturing safety, risk management, and operational leadership. This role provides direct exposure to safety practices within a plywood manufacturing environment, emphasizing hazard awareness, incident prevention, employee engagement, and continuous improvement. The intern will spend the majority of time on the production floor, working alongside operators, supervisors, and safety leaders to understand how safety is integrated into daily operations. This internship is intended to build a strong foundation for a future career in safety leadership, EHS management, or operations leadership.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Safety Management, Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Engineering, Environmental Health, Manufacturing, or a related field
  • Strong interest in manufacturing safety and risk prevention
  • Willingness and ability to work on‑site in an industrial environment
  • Comfortable interacting with employees at all levels of the organization
  • Strong observation, communication, and documentation skills
  • Curiosity, professionalism, and a proactive mindset

Responsibilities

  • On‑Site Safety Engagement Spend time on the production floor observing processes, equipment, and work practices
  • Participate in daily safety conversations and tailgates
  • Build relationships with operators and supervisors to understand real‑world safety challenges
  • Hazard Identification & Risk Awareness Assist with safety walks, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and hazard identification activities
  • Observe work tasks to identify unsafe conditions, behaviors, or process risks
  • Support documentation and follow‑up of identified hazards and corrective actions
  • Incident Prevention & Learning Assist with near‑miss reporting and basic incident documentation
  • Participate in root‑cause discussions and learning reviews following incidents or close calls
  • Help track trends related to injuries, near misses, or safety observations
  • Training & Safety Culture Support Support onboarding and safety orientation activities for new employees
  • Assist with preparation and delivery of safety communications or visual materials
  • Observe how supervisors coach safe behaviors and reinforce expectations
  • Safety Projects & Continuous Improvement Support a defined safety‑focused project aligned with mill priorities (e.g., PPE compliance, housekeeping, ergonomic risk, lockout/tagout awareness)
  • Collect data, observations, and feedback related to the project
  • Prepare a summary or presentation of findings and recommendations for mill leadership
  • Compliance & Documentation Exposure Gain exposure to OSHA / regulatory requirements relevant to manufacturing
  • Assist with basic safety documentation, checklists, or audit preparation
  • Learn how safety expectations are communicated and sustained in a regulated environment
