About The Position

The Safety & Health Compliance Inspector operates a state vehicle to travel and independently conduct health, safety, and fire inspections of all ODOT district county facilities, jobsites, and equipment. The inspections vary from serious high hazard processes to low-risk practices to determine compliance with state and/or federal laws, such as OSHA. The inspector utilizes computer and related software to complete and document Job Safety Analysis/Job Hazard Analysis (JSA/JHA), identifying job hazards, establishing corrective actions, and conducting follow-up inspections. Responsibilities also include reviewing the storage of hazardous waste materials and chemicals, safety data sheets, container labeling, chemical inventory, and hygiene plans. The inspector performs walking inspections of jobsites, observes workers for the use of prescribed safety apparel, and makes recommendations to protect workers from hazardous work methods, processes, and materials. They address unsafe worksite behavior and imminently dangerous situations with employees and supervisors, inspect machinery for properly installed safety devices, and conduct or recommend testing of work areas when needed to determine the existence of toxic materials or hazardous conditions. Annual inspections of fall protection equipment and trench/excavation jobsites are also part of the role, ensuring compliance with state and federal safety standards. The inspector reviews work zone/traffic control setups for compliance with the Ohio Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (OMUTCD).
