Summary The Safety Engineer is responsible for providing technical health and safety support for plant construction projects executed by a subcontractor. This role focuses on industrial plant construction activities, excluding civil and building construction, including mechanical installation, piping, electrical and instrumentation (E&I), equipment erection, and pre-commissioning and commissioning support. The Safety Engineer works closely with project teams to identify hazards, implement effective risk controls, and ensure compliance with regulatory and client HSE requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Safety, or a related field
  • 5–7 years of experience in a safety engineering or HSE role within plant or industrial construction projects
  • Strong knowledge of industrial construction hazards and risk assessment methodologies
  • Experience with Permit-to-Work systems, LOTO, confined space, and hot work control
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong technical judgment and attention to detail
  • Proactive hazard identification and risk mitigation mindset
  • Ability to work effectively with project teams and client representatives
  • Commitment to safety excellence and continuous improvement
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods and access elevated or confined areas
  • Climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, grasping, talking, hearing, and standing for sustained periods of time.
  • Ability to ascend and descend 20 ft cage ladder.
  • Ability to occasionally lift 40 lbs.
  • Adequate vision and hearing to identify hazards and respond to emergencies.
  • Medical clearance may be needed for fit testing for confined space apparatus

Nice To Haves

  • Professional safety certifications (e.g., CSP, ASP, NEBOSH, or equivalent)
  • Experience working as a subcontractor under EPC or main contractors
  • Experience supporting pre-commissioning and commissioning activities in plant projects

Responsibilities

  • Identify and assess hazards associated with plant construction activities, including hot work, lifting and rigging, confined space entry, electrical work, LOTO, and work at height
  • Conduct Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), Task Risk Assessment (TRA), and method statement reviews
  • Recommend engineering, administrative, and procedural controls to eliminate or reduce safety risks
  • Review construction and installation methods, temporary works, and equipment layouts from a safety perspective
  • Support constructability and design-for-safety (DfS) reviews where applicable
  • Verify that safety requirements are incorporated into work procedures and execution plans
  • Ensure construction activities comply with applicable occupational health and safety laws, regulations, and industry standards
  • Support compliance with client HSE rules, permit-to-work systems, and site requirements
  • Assist during client audits, inspections, and HSE reviews
  • Maintain accurate safety-related technical documentation and records
  • Participate in investigations of incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions
  • Support root cause analysis and development of corrective and preventive actions
  • Track corrective actions and support safety performance reporting
  • Provide technical safety guidance to supervisors, engineers, and subcontracted workers
  • Support site safety inductions, toolbox talks, and task-specific safety training
  • Promote hazard awareness and safe work practices at project sites
