About The Position

The Safety & Environmental Coordinator supports the development, implementation, and monitoring of Burgess Civil’s safety and environmental programs across all active construction projects. This role plays a key part in ensuring compliance with OSHA, FDOT, EPA, and company standards, while fostering a proactive, safety-first culture in the field. The ideal candidate is hands-on, detail-oriented, and skilled at communicating and coaching crews to work safely and efficiently.

Requirements

  • 1–3 years of experience in construction safety, environmental compliance, or related field.
  • Knowledge of OSHA construction regulations (29 CFR 1926).
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to coach and influence field teams.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites regularly.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams) and able to learn safety software/apps.

Nice To Haves

  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months).
  • Experience in civil/heavy construction (earthwork, utilities, roadway).
  • Familiarity with SWPPP, BMPs, erosion and sediment control, and environmental compliance.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a strong plus.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine jobsite inspections to identify hazards, assess controls, and verify compliance with company safety standards, OSHA requirements, and project specifications.
  • Assist in implementing corrective actions and follow up to ensure closure of safety findings.
  • Support daily safety briefings, toolbox talks, and task-specific hazard assessments (JHAs, PTPs).
  • Support investigations of incidents, near‑misses, property damage, and equipment-related events.
  • Gather statements, document findings, photograph sites, and assist in determining root causes.
  • Coordinate corrective action tracking with Safety leadership and project management.
  • Monitor compliance with environmental regulations, including erosion control, runoff management, fuel handling, spill prevention, waste disposal, and dust/noise mitigation.
  • Assist with environmental inspections, SWPPP documentation, and BMP verification.
  • Deliver safety orientations for new hires and subcontractors, ensuring understanding of policies, PPE, hazards, and expectations.
  • Assist in coordinating and tracking safety training such as OSHA, equipment certifications, confined space, fall protection, CPR/First Aid, and other required courses.
  • Provide coaching to field workers and supervisors on safe work practices and compliance expectations.
  • Maintain accurate records of incident reports, inspections, training logs, equipment certifications, and safety documents.
  • Support preparation of weekly/monthly safety reports, metrics, and dashboards for management.
  • Work closely with foremen and superintendents to address safety concerns promptly.
  • Promote a positive, proactive safety culture through visibility, communication, and teamwork.
  • Verify proper use, condition, and inspection of tools, equipment, ladders, trench boxes, traffic control devices, and PPE.
  • Support equipment and vehicle inspections in accordance with DOT, OSHA, and company requirements.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support overall safety and environmental performance.
