HJF is seeking a Safety Coordinator to provide knowledge, expertise, and technical assistance in the operation and support of one or more sectional safety programs to ensure compliance with the regulatory agency and national guidelines. This is a senior level position within the Safety and Security series. This position will be in support of the Diagnostics and Countermeasures Branch (DCB). The incumbent will be responsible for providing safety support for the Diagnostics and Countermeasures Branch (DCB), within the Center for Infectious Disease Research (CIDR), at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR). The incumbent will be responsible for assisting the DCB Safety Office in maintaining a high standard of safety practices for all of the DCB laboratories and staff. The incumbent will become knowledgeable of appropriate WRAIR, HJF, DCB, local, state and federal safety policies and help to ensure that harmonized safety practices occur within DCB's College of American Pathologists (CAP) accredited laboratories, research units and administrative areas. The incumbent will be responsible for supporting the DCB Safety Office with the coordination, operation and implementation of safety programs within DCB as well as helping to develop and deploy a safety training program for all staff.

  • Serves as the Safety Coordinator for DCB Laboratories and reports directly to the DCB Safety Officer.
  • Helps to implement the safety program for all DCB staff in accordance with OSHA, NIOSH, CDC, CAP and other agencies providing recommendations for safety practices while ensuring staff adhere to requirements outlined in DCB Procedures, WRAIR and HJF safety programs.
  • Assists in the development and review of safety specific trainings, SOPs and safety plans.
  • Assists in conducting safety specific trainings (both in person and virtually).
  • Continuously reviews current and revised safety practices, keeping well versed on new recommendations from regulatory agencies.
  • Conducts safety audits and generates risk assessment reports, audit reports and shares observations and findings with DCB Leadership.
  • Assesses risks and possible safety hazards for all aspects of operations within DCB.
  • Serves as a DCB Alternate Collateral Duty Safety Officer (CDSOs) and an Alternate Environmental Compliance and Chemical Hygiene Officer (ECCHOs).
  • Reviews all weekly laboratory safety audits for all DCB laboratories and provides audit reports to Laboratory Directors for review.
  • Helps manage the annual review of DCB's chemical hygiene inventory and ensures the safe storage, disposal, inventory, and reporting of all hazardous materials.
  • Assists in safety incident investigations, tracks incidents, near miss incidents and assigns and implements corrective and preventive actions.
  • Assists in providing annual or as needed respiratory fit tests for DCB staff.
  • Serves as a member of the DCB Safety Steering Committee, attending all meetings and helping to develop agendas, tracking completion of action items, and drafting meeting summaries.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology or Chemistry required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years' experience required.
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding the safety issues associated with the project.
  • Experience working in a laboratory.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.
