About The Position

The Safety and Occupational Health Specialist position within the Department of the Interior focuses on evaluating and improving safety, health, and wellness programs at national parks. This term position, based in either Dayton or Chillicothe, Ohio, involves analyzing work environments, providing technical support, and leading training initiatives to mitigate risks associated with hazardous operations. The role requires collaboration with park superintendents and the Midwest Region Safety program to ensure compliance and promote a safe working environment.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Successful completion of a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in safety or occupational health fields, or related fields with at least 24 semester hours in relevant disciplines.
  • At least one full year of specialized experience comparable to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service, including evaluation and analysis of safety and occupational health problems.
  • Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or similar certification is preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in managing safety or occupational health program elements.
  • Experience in developing and recommending safety and occupational health policy to higher levels of management.
  • Experience in training workers and safety personnel in safety or occupational health subjects.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, compile, and analyze behavioral, work environment, and accident conditions to understand root causes and communicate trends.
  • Provide leadership and primary technical support for the park's safety, health, and wellness programs.
  • Guide and oversee the management of specific programs involving hazardous operations conducted by park employees, volunteers, and partners.
  • Coordinate and conduct park safety, health, and wellness training.
  • Serve as the principal Safety, Health, and Wellness (SHW) advisor to park superintendents and facilitate SHW-related communication.
