The purpose of the position is to serves as the Chief, Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), and is responsible for directing, planning, developing, and implementing, assessing and accountability for oversight of the Veterans Affairs, GCVHCS, Safety and Occupational Health; Safe Patient Handling Management Program; Fire Protection; Green Environmental Management Systems (GEMS), Industrial Hygiene; and Construction Safety Programs. Responsible for the supervision, planning, and direction of work operations, and for directing daily operational activities including direct supervision interventions and has full responsibility for assuring efficient and economical work operations including planning the accomplishment of major and complex work operations on a long-range basis and participating in establishing long-range goals and facility planning Oversees the development of an industrial hygiene program to identify hazards associated with areas such as asbestos, radiation, airborne chemical contaminants, noise, temperatureextremes, fumes, mold, illumination, ergonomics, and other occupational health and safety areas. Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates set, and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work; monitors and evaluates work performance of subordinates as well as manages safety activities for the overall facility safety program to provide the patients,visitors, and staff the highest attainable level of safety possible. Assesses the effectiveness of specific programs, projects, and functions; plans alternative courses of actions to resolve hazardous conditions and unsafe work practices. Identify risks and design safeguards that aid in preventing, controlling, and mitigating the effects of fires. Incumbent examines workplace for health hazards such as exposure to lead, asbestos, pesticides, or contagious diseases; including, but not limited to other federal regulations. Ensures all personnel, including professional and administrative staff, are trained to recognize, avoid, and report all potential fire, safety, and industrial hygiene and construction hazards. Reviews work operations from an occupational safety and health manager point of view and recommends the safest, most effective methods and/or procedures to Executive Leadership. Works with community in response to various emergencies and disasters by use of coordinating multiple agencies, both local and federal, exercises. Serves as consultant for facilities design reviews as needed, including the incorporation of the most suitable/economical method of correction of deficiencies and assignment of priority based on severity of hazards. Work with management to address environmental findings and ensure that the medical center's programs satisfactorily address environmental compliance, operational controls and procedures related to environmental aspects. Participates in development, implementation and maintenance of policies, objectives, short-and long-range planning; develops and implements projects and programs to assist in accomplishment of established goal
