This position oversees specialty roles, including the industrial hygiene manager, Total Worker Health advisor, professional ergonomist, and other industry specialists. We’re looking for someone with 8+ years of experience in safety and health, expertise in team building and leading, and an in-depth understanding of injury data and how to leverage it. Requirements

  • Eight or more years of overall experience in occupational safety, risk management or a related field, including five years of management or significant leadership experience in a business setting with responsibility for programs and staff.
  • Bachelor’s degree in risk management or related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior workers’ compensation insurance experience preferred.
  • Professional designation of Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) is preferred.
  • Other combinations of skills and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Set clear direction and objectives that are aligned with SAIF’s vision and mission.

  • Collaborate closely with Safety and Health Directors and Managers to maintain strong connectivity across the division, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and operational priorities.
  • Serve as a strategic and technical leader on occupational safety and health, staying current with industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices.
  • Maintain high standards of quality and compliance by managing policies, procedures, and practices aligned with NIOSH, OSHA, and organizational safety goals and staying connected to professional networks.
  • Lead the strategic integration of Industrial Hygiene and Ergonomics into SAIF’s safety and health framework, ensuring alignment with mission, regulatory standards, and industry best practices.
  • Provide strategic oversight and guidance for the industrial hygiene and ergonomic services program, ensuring alignment with enterprise risk mitigation goals.
  • Partner with manager to drive successful implementation of exposure assessment protocols and ergonomic interventions, fostering a culture of proactive health and safety across policyholder operations.
  • Lead and integrate the work of industry specialists in safety and health into the broader safety and health strategy.
  • Lead and integrate Total Worker Health into the broader safety and health strategy.
  • Analyze emerging industry trends, utilize data and analytics to understand and oversee the design and implementation of safety programs and goals for policyholders within the specialties to inform decisions.
  • Translate data into actionable strategies.
  • Manage and support a team of geographically dispersed specialty senior safety management consultants across Oregon, ensuring key performance indicators (KPI’s) and business services are being met and sustained.
  • Ensure professional consulting skills are embedded in employees' work results.
  • Joint visits with consultants are required.
  • Champion continuous improvement and knowledge sharing within the safety and health division, ensuring the team is mentoring, advising and coaching as a technical advisor to safety and health consultants throughout the state.
  • Communicate program goals, strategies, and results to employees, regional and small business safety teams, underwriting, group partners, and other SAIF employees as appropriate.
  • Coordinate the development and corporate dissemination of occupational safety and health best practices.
  • Develop and maintain effective collaborative relationships with SAIF management, regulatory agencies, and internal and external business partners for the effective integration and ongoing success of the specialty consultant team.
  • Develop strategic initiatives and long-term goals/objectives that are aligned with Safety and Health and SAIF’s vision and mission.
  • Represent the team in high-level safety discussions among management team and other stakeholders.
  • Prepare and present reports and program updates for the chief of safety, executives, and others as required.
  • Occasionally requested to present information on the team and objectives to a variety of audiences, including the COO, CEO and board of directors.
  • Prepare operational budget, monitor expenditures throughout the year, and manage variances to ensure budgetary guidelines are met while upholding high standards of customer service excellence.
  • Manage performance or behavioral matters within the team.
  • Ensure all related activities comply with personnel policies and procedures and are completed in coordination with Human Resources.
  • Build a team culture in which differences are embraced.
  • Regularly expose team members to diverse perspectives and leverage differences to strengthen workgroup performance.
  • Model adaptability and consistently seek to understand other world views, perspectives, and approaches to work.
  • Demonstrate curiosity, diplomacy and empathy when working across groups.

  • This position requires driving a SAIF vehicle or personal vehicle on behalf of SAIF. The incumbent is required to possess and maintain a valid Oregon driver’s license along with an acceptable driving record according to SAIF’s policy.
