Purpose Church World Service (CWS) seeks a Safeguarding Advisor to play a central role in ensuring that CWS programs, people, operations, and partnerships create safe environments for all. This role will provide technical leadership, capacity building, oversight, and case management support across CWS operations worldwide. This role is currently funded through June 2026. It may be extended based on funding availability. It will report to the Chief Operating Officer and require partnership and close collaboration with the Executive Leadership Team, Senior Director of Operations, Senior Director of Human Resources, Director of Program Compliance, and programs teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required; advanced degree preferred.
  • 7+ years’ experience in safeguarding, protection, child protection, PSEAH, or related fields within humanitarian, development, or social service contexts.
  • Demonstrated experience handling safeguarding allegations with sensitivity, confidentiality, and survivor-centered approaches.
  • Strong understanding of international safeguarding standards.
  • Experience working across multiple countries and cultures, ideally within large and complex organizations.
  • Excellent training, facilitation, and capacity-building skills.
  • Experience with matrix management, and ability to lead and influence across different positions and levels of an organization.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to juggle multiple competing priorities.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and interpersonal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead implementation and continuous improvement of CWS safeguarding policies, procedures, and standards across the organization.
  • Strengthen organizational safeguarding frameworks to reflect best practice in safeguarding and child protection, particularly in humanitarian, development, or social service settings, and cross-cultural settings.
  • Serve as focal point for reporting, triaging, and managing safeguarding concerns in line with CWS polices and procedures, and survivor-centered principles.
  • Coordinate with senior and regional leadership, HR, legal, and security teams on investigation and follow-up actions.
  • Ensure documentation, confidentiality, and timely resolution of safeguarding cases.
  • Design and deliver safeguarding training for staff, partners, and others, appropriately contextualized to diverse environments.
  • Provide training and capacity building to leaders and safeguarding focal points across CWS to ensure consistency and quality of safeguarding efforts.
  • Offer technical input into program design and organizational strategy related to safeguarding.
  • Support donor reporting and representation in safeguarding-related grant proposals as needed.
  • Occasional travel as needed (less than up to 10% time).
  • Any other duties as required.
