About The Position

The placements will support the Seward Ranger District's Russian River program while working along Forest Service staff in the Chugach National Forest and Kenai National Wildlife Refuge along the Russian River/Kenai River Confluence. Placements will be based out of Moose Pass, AK. Work includes but is not limited to public information, educating public about resource conservation, bear activity, and general area information. This position will assist in placing and maintaining snow fencing for stream bank protection. At times updating signs, minor trail clearing, and minor carpentry repairs may happen as well. Hiking, wading and crossing rivers, use of ATV(Occasional use), and walking on primitive river trail. Most of the trails are on an elevated boardwalk along river. Assisting in documenting bear activity in the area, assisting in entering volunteer data, and working with partners, volunteers and other agencies managing a busy Salmon fishing area. Placements may also assist the trails and developed recreation programs maintaining and constructing trails, cleaning outhouses, posting signage, and maintaining backcountry campsites.

Requirements

  • Placements will need to bring a positive attitude
  • Be willing to interact with public
  • Work in inclement (wet) weather
  • All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger
  • Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States

  • Experience traveling or camping in bear country.
