About The Position

As a Paramedic at Mayers Memorial Healthcare District (MMHD), you will provide advanced life support to patients in critical situations, ensuring they receive appropriate medical attention during transport and at emergency scenes. This role requires swift decision-making and adherence to medical protocols to assess the severity of illness or injury and determine the best course of action. The Paramedic is responsible for patient care until the patient is safely transferred to a higher level of care, following MMHD and local emergency medical services protocols.

Requirements

Certifications: A valid Paramedic certification in California and Sierra Sacramento Valley (SSV) certification is mandatory. Required American Heart Association certifications include ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support), and BLS/CPR (Basic Life Support). You must also hold a valid CA Ambulance Driver's License with a Medical Examiner's Certification.
Driving Requirements: A clean California Driver's License and an excellent driving record are essential. Experience operating emergency vehicles and navigating ALS (Advanced Life Support) systems is highly desirable.
Communication and Attitude: Strong verbal and written communication skills are required for patient interactions and documentation. A positive working attitude, adaptability to change, and the ability to function effectively in a team environment are crucial to this role.

Additional Experience: Experience in pre-hospital settings, EMS, and public education, whether in the field or classroom, is highly valued. Experience operating in an ALS system or driving emergency vehicles is advantageous.

Responsibilities

Patient Care: Provide high-quality pre-hospital care in accordance with the Standard of Care, local LEMSA protocols, and national treatment doctrines. The Paramedic manages patient care from initial contact through the transfer to advanced medical personnel, ensuring all treatment is aligned with established guidelines.
Collaboration: You will engage with hospital staff, physicians, and various public service agencies, including fire, police, and highway patrol. Practical cooperation with these entities ensures seamless patient transfers and response coordination. The role also involves working closely with ground ambulance personnel and communicating with patients and their families.
Public Relations and Education: In addition to direct patient care, the Paramedic may be an educational resource for the community, students, and coworkers. Responsibilities include participating in public outreach and educational programs to enhance understanding of emergency medical services and promote public health.
Driving and Vehicle Operation: Operate ambulances and other emergency vehicles safely and in compliance with California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Department of Transportation (DOT) driving guidelines. Safety and professionalism are paramount in all vehicle operations.
Professionalism and Ethics: Uphold a high integrity, confidentiality, and competency standard in all interactions. Maintain a professional demeanor in patient care, public interactions, and internal collaboration with coworkers and management.
Administrative Duties: The Paramedic will be responsible for accurate, timely, and legible documentation of all patient interactions and care provided. This includes maintaining precise records for patient transfers and medical interventions.
Compliance and Certifications: Stay current with all required certifications, including Paramedic licensure, ACLS, PALS, BLS/CPR, and relevant driving certifications. Maintaining these credentials ensures you comply with local, state, and federal regulations and can provide the highest quality care.
Feedback and Improvement: Provide constructive feedback to management on ways to improve patient care, working conditions, and system performance. This proactive engagement helps in optimizing operational efficiency and patient outcomes.
Team Collaboration: You are expected to work collaboratively with other MMHD staff, including assisting in the Emergency Department (ED) during periods of high patient volume or when requested by management. Your ability to adapt to varying clinical environments will enhance patient care in both the field and the ED.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: This position requires significant physical activity, including lifting and carrying patients and medical equipment, operating under adverse conditions, and being prepared to manage various environmental hazards such as trauma scenes and exposure to infectious diseases. The Paramedic may work in rural or backcountry settings and must be able to perform in physically demanding situations.
