Roller Operator - CDL Preferred
About The Position
Thomann Asphalt is a fourth-generation, family-owned business. The company’s primary focus is on commercial and industrial paving, as well as site development work, in both the private and public sectors. Thomann’s extensive experience has kept the contractor in business for over 100 years. We specialize in parking lot maintenance, including paving, patching, seal coating, crack sealing, drainage work, and site work, which encompasses a full range of grading, excavation, and utility installation services. The Roller Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of Breakdown Rollers and Finish Rollers. The Roller Operator distributes, breaks down, compresses, and gives a finished surface to cooling asphalt.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- CDL A preferred
- Willing to train
- OSHA 10-hour certification is preferred but not required
- Self-motivated, safety-minded, dependable, and detail-oriented
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to comply with safety regulations
- Adherence to the attendance policy
- This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday. Extended hours, nights, and weekend work may be necessary based on business needs. While in season, the typical work week is approximately 40-50 hours.
- This position may require occasional travel and out-of-town work.
Responsibilities
- Operate the roller and other heavy equipment safely and appropriately.
- Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment.
- Maintain and ensure that the vehicle and equipment are stocked with needed materials.
- Safely operate roller in successive overlapping passes over surfaces to be compacted, rolling asphalt to the desired compaction and smoothness.
- Determine the speed and direction of the machine, based on knowledge of compressibility of material under changing temperatures, so that ridges do not form by excessive pressure.
- Push hand roller and pound surfaces using a hand tamp or guide portable plate compactors over areas not accessible to a road roller.
- Operate the Breakdown roller to achieve proper compaction.
- Operate the Finish Roller in successive overlapping passes to apply the final finish, and remove imperfections with a finish roller
- Serve as a crew member on jobsites, as needed
- Other duties as assigned
