About The Position

The Roller Mill Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining rolling mill equipment used to produce reinforcing steel bar (rebar). This role requires strong mechanical ability to set up rollers, monitor material flow, and troubleshoot equipment to ensure consistent product quality and efficient production in a high temperature environment

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Mechanical aptitude with hands-on industrial or steel mill experience preferred
  • Experience in rolling mills, especially long products or rebar, is highly desirable
  • Ability to read gauges, micrometers, calipers, and production specs
  • Basic understanding of rolling processes, temperatures, and material flow
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of roll alignment, pass design basics, and guide setup
  • Ability to identify product defects and make real-time adjustments
  • Familiarity with hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-heat environment
  • Exposure to extreme heat, scale, dust and high noise levels
  • Physically demanding (standing, lifting, climbing, pushing, pulling, etc.)
  • Required PPE: hard hat, gloves, steel-toe boots, heat-resistant gear
  • Overtime and an occasional Saturday (depending on business needs)

Responsibilities

  • Operate rolling mill stands to reduce and shape axles/billets into rebar of various sizes and grades
  • Set up and adjust rollers, guides and stands to meet rebar specifications (diameter, rib pattern and straightness)
  • Monitor axle/billet heating, rolling speed, and cooling process
  • Inspect rebar for surface defects, dimensional accuracy and proper rib formation
  • Perform routine mechanical maintenance including lubrication, roll changes, alignment and minor repairs
  • Assist with roll pass changes, guides adjustments and size changeovers
  • Troubleshoot issues such as misalignment, cobbles, uneven rolling, or surface defects
  • Work with maintenance teams on hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical system repairs
  • Maintain production records, including sizes, yield and downtime
  • Follow strict safety procedures around hot material, moving equipment and pinch points
