About The Position

The Veterinary Technician position at the University of Chicago's Animal Resources Center (ARC) involves supporting clinical research through routine laboratory data collection and analysis, as well as providing care for laboratory animals. Requirements

  • Minimum college or university degree in a related field.
  • Knowledge and skills developed through less than 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

  • Bachelor's Degree in a field relevant to the research being conducted.
  • 1-3 years of experience in a biomedical research environment.
  • 1-3 years of experience in a research animal setting.
  • Prior experience with rodent technical procedures.
  • AALAS certification at any level.

Responsibilities

  • Perform health assessments, analgesic management, and medical care of rodents and exotic species under veterinary supervision.
  • Communicate with veterinarians, husbandry staff, and investigative staff, assisting with training and advising on animal handling and health procedures.
  • Record and maintain complete and accurate documentation of animal health and procedures.
  • Support technical procedures and assist with rodent quarantine and health monitoring programs.
  • Manage the shipment and receipt of animals from external sources, including quarantine and transfer processes.
  • Collect diagnostic samples and manage outbreak responses in conjunction with veterinarians.
  • Assist with environmental sample collection and processing, including water quality testing.
  • Analyze clinical samples and specimens under guidance, preparing them for examination and reporting results.
  • Conduct research on new technologies for laboratory implementation and solve routine problems related to data management.
  • Maintain quality and safety control measures in the laboratory.
