About The Position

Rugged Robotics is on a mission to empower the construction industry to build better by innovating new approaches to tough problems using automation. We are a fast-paced start-up environment where every employee takes on many roles and wears many hats. To help our customers to build better, we need to build the best team. The software team at Rugged Robotics is responsible for prototyping, developing, and implementing software solutions that power the automation of our construction layout robots. As a Robotics Software Engineer working on robots at a start-up, you will be solving problems and improving functionality on real-world products while also creating innovative solutions for our next generation of robots. The Role Architect and build novel software features for mobile robots that tackle tough problems with robotic control, motion planning, perception, and localization. Iteratively prototype and test software directly on hardware platforms in our labs and on our customer’s jobsites. Improve the speed, precision, and reliability of our current platform by investigating, modifying and refining existing software features. Collaborate with team-members working in the field to determine the root-cause of issues and quickly generate solutions. Make informed & objective engineering decisions by creating simulations, methodically running experiments, and conducting analyses with a range of techniques. You Are Experienced with years of software development on robotic systems, comfortable with ROS, Python, & C++, and familiar with common coding practices including revision control and CI/CM Ready to take code from concept to implementation on a product that exceeds the customer’s expectations. Knowledgeable with relevant areas of robotics & control such as kinematics, sensor fusion, path planning, perception, calibration algorithms, and firmware development. Hands-on with deploying code on physical hardware and root causing bugs related to mechanical, electrical, and software issues. Highly collaborative across function boundaries, including Mechanical, Electrical and Operations Engineers. Eager to learn new technologies, want to grow as an individual with our organization, and comfortable working autonomously in a fast-paced environment. Able to and enjoy traveling on the job to see your product in action and learning from our customers. Great to Have Experienced with developing control solutions for hardware prototypes and releasing code on a product both at the individual actuator and full system level. Well versed in software and electromechanical considerations to create robust algorithms, control-loop tunings, and calibration tools that will meet performance specifications at scale despite manufacturing variations. Experience architecting complete software solutions Understanding of robotic systems such as motors, transmissions, and sensors. Capable of setting up testing environments to automate software verification.
