Robotics Intern - Application and Deployment Engineering

Toyota Research InstituteLos Altos, CA
94d$45 - $65

About The Position

At Toyota Research Institute (TRI), we’re on a mission to improve the quality of human life. We’re developing new tools and capabilities to amplify the human experience. To lead this transformative shift in mobility, we’ve built a world-class team in Automated Driving, Energy & Materials, Human-Centered AI, Human Interactive Driving, Large Behavior Models, and Robotics. This is a summer 2026 paid 12-week internship opportunity. Please note that this internship will be a hybrid in-office role. We are looking for curious and motivated engineering interns with strong software skills and a passion for making robotics work in the real world. You’ll contribute to building the systems, tools, and APIs that enable users to get value from advanced algorithms — whether that’s robotics platform software, computer vision training and deployment pipelines, or application features that improve usability in manufacturing environments. This role is ideal for someone excited to bridge research and practice, and who thrives on seeing ideas turn into working, scalable systems. This internship will be embedded within our Opportunity Discovery and Technology Adoption (ODTA) department within TRI Robotics division. The ODTA team is dedicated to achieving real-world impact for the groundbreaking research produced within our robotics division. We work closely with our experts in mobile manipulation, robotics user experience designers, and our prototyping & research operations team at TRI. As a member of the team, you will be working on software needed for our robotics research to succeed in the field.

  • Strong software engineering skills in Python and/or C++.
  • Desire to work on deploying innovative robotic systems in real-world environments.
  • Shown initiative outside of studies (e.g., demonstrable projects, volunteering, etc).
  • A team player with strong communication skills and a willingness to learn from others.
  • Passionate about seeing robotics have a real-world, large-scale impact.

Responsibilities

  • Develop software features for applications to advance usability in manufacturing environments.
  • Build tooling and interfaces to facilitate scaling, performance and customer self service.
  • Partner with a multidisciplinary team including other engineers and research scientists across ODTA, Robotics, and Toyota.
  • Stay up to date on the state-of-the-art in robotics, machine learning and computer vision techniques happening across the Robotics division.
