About The Position

The Robot Learning Lab at Bosch Research Pittsburgh invites skilled robotics engineers for research and development at the intersection of robotics systems, telemetry / sensor data capture, and machine learning. The role will work closely with internal teams of robotics research scientists, research engineers, and research interns; the role will focus on mocap/teleoperated data-collection, robotics hardware management, robotics station-building, and machine learning engineering — particularly for constructing high-quality datasets that will be used for training robot foundation models, such as Vision Language Action models (VLAs). Prospective colleagues with gaming backgrounds and/or strong experience with AR/VR/XR systems are highly preferred.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Masters degree in Robotics, Machine Learning, Computer Engineering, or related
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • 3+ years in testing or using interactive systems (games, simulations, robotics, or related)
  • Familiarity with VR environments and/or game/simulation testing workflows
  • Proficiency with bug tracking tools (e.g, Jira or related).

Nice To Haves

  • Background in Robot Learning, Robotics, or Embodied AI research and development;
  • Ability to master new physical tasks quickly and perform them optimally.
  • Consistent attention to detail with a methodical approach to problem-solving.
  • Excellent attention to detail, spatial awareness, and coordination.
  • Ability to methodically investigate, reproduce, and validate issues.
  • Enthusiasm, patience, and a drive to improve processes and outcomes.
  • Adaptability to evolving technologies and quick learning of new systems.
  • Experience developing / using robotics tools, simulations, data-collection systems, etc.
  • Extensive experience in working on multiple robot hardware platforms
  • Extensive experience with the Linux command line

Responsibilities

  • Operate robot teleoperation systems to guide robots through designated tasks, with a careful consideration about smooth, high-quality, and task-relevant motion-capture.
  • Perform manipulation tasks in extended reality (XR), to produce data that captures meaningful object interactions.
  • Coordinate with the ML team to plan data collection, manage machine availability, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Apply systems instincts to identify mechanical inconsistencies, behavioral anomalies, UX gaps, and workflow issues.
  • Ensure safe operation of all robotics systems, adhering to protocols for both human and machine safety.
  • Leverage and extend existing robot operation procedures, ensuring safe operation of all robotics systems and adhering to protocols for both human and machine safety.
  • Work with team to produce high-quality experiments for academic publications and industrial deployments; support team in drafting publications, invention reports, and technical reports.
