The National Trust for Historic Preservation invites applications for the 2025-2026 Silman Fellow for Preservation Engineering. This 12-month fellowship provides a recent graduate with the opportunity to work on various restoration, rehabilitation, and preservation projects at the Trust’s 27 sites nationwide, and to work as part of TYLin’s Buildings Sector in-person as a structural engineer. The Silman Fellow is required to complete a deliverable for the benefit to the field of historic preservation that is suitable for presentation and/or publication. Upon successful completion of the Fellowship, the Fellow will continue as a full-time TYLin employee. Requirements

  • B.S. in Civil, Architectural, or Structural Engineering
  • M.S. or M.A. in Historic Preservation or M.S. in Structural or Architectural Engineering with an academic background in historic preservation is required
  • Willingness and ability to travel nationwide
  • Demonstrated professional interest in historic preservation

Responsibilities

  • Master planning and condition assessments
  • Consultant and contractor team selection
  • Technical research/materials conservation methods
  • Preventive and corrective maintenance
  • Contract document practices
  • Bidding and negotiation practices
  • Job site administration practices
  • Work with the project team to prepare structural design and drawings for buildings (commercial, institutional, residential) from conceptual and preliminary stages of design through to completion.
  • Perform field review for projects under construction.
