The History Department at Gettysburg College invites applications for the Robert C. Fluhrer Distinguished Professor in Civil War Studies beginning August 2026. The successful candidate will be a recognized scholar in Civil War era history and a dedicated teacher, making contributions in scholarship, teaching, advising, mentoring, and service to the department and College. The successful candidate will teach at all levels of the curriculum in History and Civil War Era Studies, including 100-level world history, 200- and 300-level Civil War era history, and a senior seminar. Participating in the First-Year Seminar and Second-Year Seminar programs as part of the general curriculum would also be welcome. The Fluhrer Professor will have a teaching load equivalent to five courses, annual professional development funds, and an accelerated sabbatical cycle. Additionally, the Fluhrer Professor will have opportunities to collaborate with the Civil War Institute and its programs on campus. Gettysburg College is a highly selective liberal arts college located within 90 minutes of the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan area. Established in 1832, the College has a rich history and is situated on a 220-acre campus with an enrollment of over 2,200 students.
