About The Position

The Roaming Quality Technician is responsible for in-process, first article, and final inspections across multiple manufacturing areas. This role is highly hands-on and mobile, supporting production teams by verifying compliance to engineering drawings, specifications, and AS9100 requirements while identifying quality risks early and driving corrective action.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical specifications, common business documents, and industry publications.
  • Ability to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints from manufacturing personnel.
  • Ability to write reports or procedures; and effectively present information to management, customers, vendors and employees.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, angles, ratios, significant digits, rounding, scientific notation, Cartesian coordinates, area, volume, English to metric unit conversion, and temperature conversion.
  • Ability to work with principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to walk; sit, talk and hear, stand, use hands; reach with hands and arms and climb or balance.
  • Physical requirements are the ability to lift up to 25 pounds continuously, 50 pounds occasionally, or up to 100 pounds, with assistance.
  • Vision requirements include ability to adjust focus, depth perception, peripheral, distance, color and close vision.
  • Must possess basic personal computer skills including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products, to include Word, Excel, Power Point and Microsoft Outlook.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical degree or certificate from a two or four year college or university preferred or three years previous experience in a quality function.
  • Related certificates (ASQ), licenses, and registrations preferred but not required.
  • Experience with ERP/MRP (SAP, Oracle, Epicor) systems preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Perform in-process, first article, and final inspections for machining, stamping, welding, and assembly operations
  • Verify product conformance to engineering drawings, GD&T, specifications, and work instructions
  • Conduct shop-floor inspections using hand tools and precision measuring equipment
  • Review and verify inspection records
  • Identify nonconformances, issue NCRs, and support containment and root-cause activities
  • Support welding inspections per AWS / customer requirements (visual and dimensional)
  • Communicate inspection results clearly with production, engineering, and quality leadership
  • Promote a “quality at the source” culture on the manufacturing floor
  • Assist in inspection lab when needed
  • Use manual measurement devices (e.g., calipers, micrometers, indicators, height gages, pin gages, thread gages, optical comparators) to obtain linear, radial, angular, and geometric dimensions of intermediate complexity.
  • Use automated measurement devices (e.g., coordinate measurement machines (CMM), image systems, and laser scanners) to obtain linear, radial, angular, and geometric dimensions.
  • Use coordinate measurement machine (CMM) to calibrate probe tips, perform manual measurements for length and diameter, perform ripple scans, overlay CAD profiles, and create inspection programs of intermediate complexity.
  • Use image system to create inspection programs of advanced complexity.
  • Determine surface finish through use of fingernail comparators and profilometers.
  • Perform aided and unaided visual inspection to identify defects.
  • Prepare metallurgical samples by sectioning, mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching samples.
  • Measure weld bead width, penetration, symmetry, root gap, undercut, and grain size features on a metallurgical sample using a microscope.
  • Use micro‐hardness and macro‐hardness testers to determine sample hardness.
  • Understand and apply metrology methods to determine angularity, circular runout, circularity, concentricity, cylindricity, flatness, parallelism, perpendicularity, profile of a line, profile of a surface, straightness, symmetry, total runout, and true position.
  • Calculate and apply bonus tolerances using maximum material condition (MMC) and least material condition (LMC).
  • Enter inspection results into Excel and web‐based database.
  • Prepare first article inspection reports (FAIR) per AS9102 Form 3: Characteristic Accountability, Verification and Compatibility Evaluation.
  • Create nonconformance reports as required.
  • Participate in and conduct gage R&R studies as needed.
  • Contact suppliers to obtain quotes on gages, fixtures, and metallurgical consumables.
  • Serve as liaison with customers and external auditors as needed.
  • Must comply (or adhere) to the rules and regulations mandated under ISO 9001, AS9100, and ITAR.
  • Must be able to communicate, get along and work well with other employees.
  • Being at work every day and coming to work on‐time is required.
  • Ability to pass an annual eye exam per QP400.
  • Establish and maintain a safe working environment in accordance with company policy.
  • Maintain a clean and functional work area.
  • Any other duties assigned by supervisor or manager.
