About The Position

The General Transportation Tech I and II positions involve performing routine transportation operations and maintenance support work, including roadway maintenance and repair, equipment operation, preventive maintenance, traffic control, and assisting the public during emergencies. Employees are expected to follow standard practices with minimal supervision. The role requires interaction with private entities and involves various physical tasks and equipment operation.

Requirements

  • No education required for GTT I; GTT II requires 1 year of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or heavy equipment operation.
  • Valid driver’s license at the time of application.
  • Must obtain a Commercial Class 'A' Driver's License with an 'N' Endorsement within 180 days of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts.
  • Performs basic welding as needed.
  • Uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to maintenance activities.
  • Provides support to local law enforcement at accident sites and assists stranded motorists.
  • Controls traffic by placing and gathering cones, warning signs, and barricades.
  • Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves them.
  • Inspects barricades for compliance with standards.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way, performs roadway repairs, and erects/repairs guard rails and highway markers.
  • Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards, and comfort stations.
  • Cleans litter and debris from roadways.
  • Mows rights-of-way and performs landscape maintenance.
  • Operates light equipment such as front-end loaders, pneumatic rollers, and street sweepers.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections and routine servicing on equipment.
  • Responds to emergency situations such as floods and accidents.
  • Inspects maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship.
  • Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on small projects (GTT II).
  • Inspects traffic control devices for compliance at construction sites.
  • Maintains construction project records and processes related paperwork.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as large front-end loaders and dump trucks.
  • Identifies and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
  • Works on a survey crew and operates survey instruments.
