About The Position

Roadway Design Engineer STV currently has openings for a Roadway Design Engineer I in the Transportation group in New Jersey. STV is seeking a motivated Roadway Design Engineer I to support the delivery of NJDOT transportation projects. The ideal candidate will be interested in developing a strong foundation in roadway design standards and practices and learning how to apply NJDOT, AASHTO, and FHWA criteria under the guidance of senior engineers and task leads. This role offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting projects in Concept Development (CD), Preliminary Engineering (PE), and Final Design (FD), while growing within a collaborative and technically driven design team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related field (or expected within six (6) months of hire).
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification in New Jersey, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • 0–3 years of experience in roadway or transportation engineering (internship or co-op experience acceptable).
  • Familiarity with Bentley’s OpenRoads Designer or a strong willingness to learn.
  • Basic understanding of roadway design principles and geometric design concepts.
  • Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to NJDOT, AASHTO, or FHWA design standards is a plus.
  • Experience with MicroStation and the Microsoft Office Suite; AutoCAD/Civil 3D experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Support roadway design tasks on NJDOT transportation projects in CD, PE, and FD phases.
  • Assist with development of roadway alignments, profiles, typical sections, corridors, cross sections, grading, and plan production.
  • Utilize Bentley’s OpenRoads Designer to assist in developing roadway models and contract plan deliverables.
  • Apply NJDOT, AASHTO, and FHWA roadway design standards under the direction of senior engineers and task leads.
  • Prepare plan sheets, exhibits, quantities, and supporting technical documentation.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines, including drainage, traffic, structural, ROW, utilities, and environmental, under supervision.
  • Participate in internal design reviews and quality control processes.
  • Support preparation of technical memoranda and NJDOT submission packages.
  • Actively seek feedback, training, and mentorship to develop technical and professional skills.
