Requirements

  • Trade School/College or equivalent work experience in communications preferred
  • Minimum of five years of practical experience in all aspects of communications
  • Knowledge of Department of Transportation & Federal Railroad Administration rules and regulations preferred
  • Must be familiar with communication systems including digital communications, fiber optics, base stations, remote antenna sites and FCC safety compliant procedures
  • Experience in the application of labor contracts
  • Communicates successfully with a variety of disciplines and levels, both internal and external
  • Strong interpersonal skills for training and coaching activities
  • Possesses basic knowledge of MS Office, specifically Word and Excel, and the ability to learn other software applications
  • Must have experience in the application of labor contracts
  • Must have a high school diploma, GED or equivalent educational credential
  • A valid driver’s license is required to successfully travel throughout the Commuter Rail network and locations as assigned
  • Work location: Must be willing and able to travel to any of our MA Commuter Rail locations as required
  • Must be available to always respond to emergency calls
  • Must be flexible enough to cover special planned assignments as necessary
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position
  • Drug and alcohol screening: Employment contingent upon passing pre-employment drug and alcohol screen. Also, contingent upon receiving a favorable background check. Must pass a physical examination.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates understanding and adheres to the KCS principles of Employee Engagement, Operational Excellence, Safety & Security, and Economic Performance
  • Completes other duties as assigned
  • Effectively managing team of communication department employees
  • Identifies and requests training as per employee training needs
  • Oversee the supervision of assigned personnel, work allocation, training, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance
  • Supports Senior Engineer in checking qualifications and authorizing Communication contractors
  • Manage processes and procedures that ensure reliability of the system
  • Implements and monitors operational practices to ensure equipment reliability and quality service while ensuring a safe and productive workplace
  • Responsible for quality assurance of work performed by employees
  • Manage departmental budget, workforce, and assets
  • Administers and manages the Department's annual budget to meet financial targets
  • Analyzes utilization of department workforce and facilities to continuously identify improvement in work practices and scheduling
  • Assists Senior Engineer and IT/Digital Solutions Department in collecting and updating Communications Asset information
  • Administers collective bargaining agreements as required through regular job performance
  • Comply with and enforce all applicable rules and regulations
  • Comply with and ensure staff compliance with all safety rules and procedures and report all hazards as required
  • Ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and Company rules and regulations and Contract Agreements
  • Accountable for rules and regulations governing various communication systems as established by the Department of Transportation, FRA, etc.
  • Attends and participates in all assigned training, specifically safety and security related
