About The Position

This position reports to the Road Superintendent and is responsible for managing the maintenance, upkeep and operations of the public grounds owned by Saline County. The role involves overseeing a team of workers, ensuring that the property is safe, attractive and functional for public use. This position is designated as a "safety sensitive position" as defined by Act 593 of 2017. An essential function of the position is the ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.

Requirements

  • High school or GED, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job education in a specific skill area, e.g. construction equipment operation, heavy equipment used in road operations, etc, with 5 years related experience and/or training, and 2 years related management experience. Management experience in this position is task oriented as well as supervising other employees.
  • Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence. ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, clients, general public and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of known variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram formats.
  • Class A CDL required; must possess knowledge of equipment operations numerous pieces of machinery.
  • Intermediate: Accounting, Spreadsheet, Word Processing/Typing
  • Knowledge of traffic regulations and the practices followed in the care and safe operation of vehicles.
  • Knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely with and around mechanized equipment.
  • Knowledge of principles of operations of motor equipment sufficient to detect defective operation and perform preventive maintenance work.
  • Ability to safely perform physical labor related to the operation of motorized equipment.
  • Skill in the operation of assigned equipment at a level to perform assigned tasks in a safe manner.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • The applicant must be registered on the FMSCA Commercial Driver’s License Drug and Alcohol clearinghouse prior to employment or after obtaining a CDL to ensure the driver is not prohibited from performing safety sensitive functions.
  • Applicants are required to pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen along with random drug screens throughout employment with Saline County.

Responsibilities

  • Supervision and management of grounds keeping staff.
  • Schedule work assignments and ensure proper use of equipment.
  • Oversee safety training protocols and equipment operation.
  • Ensure grounds are well maintained.
  • Inspect grounds regularly to identify issues like damaged equipment and hazardous conditions.
  • Organize repairs and improvements such as tree trimming, landscaping and equipment.
  • Assist in the management of the budget for maintenance and operations, including the purchasing of supplies and equipment needed.
  • Ensure all operations comply with local regulations and safety standards. This includes ensuring proper use of safety protocols for workers and the public.
  • This position requires experience with equipment such as mowers, trimmers and heavy machinery.
  • Attends departmental meetings, functions and safety training as required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • This position will be on an on-call rotation.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
