About The Position

The Road Foreman position at Amtrak is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of trains and oversight of train and engine (T&E) crews. This role involves leadership, management oversight, and compliance with Amtrak, federal, and state operating requirements. The Road Foreman ensures adherence to safety plans and operational regulations while managing employee performance and training.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Certified class I train service engineer.
  • Minimum of 2 years operating experience as a train service engineer and/or as a road foreman with no violations as per CFR 49 part 240.117.
  • Qualified as a designated supervisor of locomotive engineers.
  • Demonstrated business and financial management experience.
  • Five years experience as a train service crew member or Train Director/Dispatcher.
  • Qualified on physical characteristics of the territory.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Working knowledge of Amtrak policies and procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in transportation, business, or related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Five years supervisory experience leading and managing others.
  • Five years experience with train operation, crew base, crew management, operations, train handling, and service delivery.
  • Ability to develop and manage an operating budget.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and guidance to engineers.
  • Oversee operations in coordination with the road trainmaster, ensuring compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Monitor employees for compliance with policies and operating practices, initiating action for non-compliance.
  • Manage train operations to optimize on-time performance (OTP) and recommend performance improvements.
  • Respond to service disruptions within the area of responsibility.
  • Implement safety plans and provide written and oral reports.
  • Interview, select, and manage new-hire locomotive engineers.
  • Administer engineer recertification courses and operating rules classes.
  • Conduct efficiency tests and maintain employee records.
  • Ensure engine crews attend training classes and communicate with carrier railroad managers regarding territory operations.
  • Manage crew base budget for locomotive engineers.
