About The Position

The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) Registered Nurse (RN) position at the Department of Veterans Affairs VA New York Healthcare System involves providing high-quality, evidence-based care to critically ill patients. The RN will oversee licensed vocational nurses and nursing assistants, ensuring effective patient education and self-management while collaborating with an interdisciplinary team to improve patient outcomes. Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
  • Graduation from a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. state or territory.
  • Proficiency in basic written and spoken English.

Nice To Haves

  • ICU/SICU experience
  • 1 year of Med-Surg Telemetry nursing experience
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification

Responsibilities

  • Provide competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients.
  • Oversee licensed vocational nurses and nursing assistants as appropriate.
  • Assist in directing nursing education, orientation, and competencies.
  • Demonstrate leadership in delivering holistic care through collaborative strategies.
  • Provide direct care for acutely/critically ill patients at high risk for life-threatening health problems.
  • Coordinate care focused on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction.
  • Administer medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to influence care outcomes.
  • Utilize invasive/noninvasive monitoring technology for patient assessment.
  • Evaluate practice based on best evidence and provide constructive feedback to peers.
  • Foster a safe and supportive environment for healthcare professionals' development.
  • Participate in activities to sustain an evidence-based practice culture.
