About The Position

The Surgical RN provides professional nursing services in the perioperative environment by delivering patient assessment, intraoperative support, and post-anesthesia care as assigned. This role works closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and surgical technologists to maintain a safe, sterile environment and support optimal surgical outcomes. The Surgical RN participates in preoperative teaching, intraoperative monitoring, and postoperative evaluation to ensure continuity of care across the surgical experience. As part of a collaborative, team-oriented perioperative setting, this position supports safe, evidence-based surgical care through strong clinical judgment, communication, and attention to detail.

Requirements

  • Current or temporary RN license in ND or compact RN licensure.
  • BLS certification required within orientation period.
  • RN program as evidenced by licensure.
  • Official diploma or transcript from the school/university from where Degree was received.
  • Must be efficient, able to make appropriate judgments.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill in applying principles of asepsis and infection control.
  • Demonstrates ability to function effectively and harmoniously as a team member.
  • The Surgical RN requires the ability to stand for prolonged periods in the operating room, assist with patient transfers and positioning, and handle instruments and equipment using fine motor skills.
  • Team members must be able to lift, push, or pull at least 35–50 pounds and assist with heavier loads as part of a team.
  • Adequate vision, hearing, and communication abilities are essential for maintaining situational awareness and supporting patient safety in the perioperative environment.
  • Work is performed in operating rooms, pre and postoperative areas, and perioperative support spaces with potential exposure to blood and bodily fluids, chemicals, cleaning agents, and surgical equipment hazards.
  • The role requires adherence to sterile technique, infection prevention, and safety protocols, as well as use of appropriate PPE.
  • Schedules may include early mornings, evenings, variable hours, and on call or standby requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • CNOR certification preferred, not required for RN Circulator.
  • Preferred past work experience, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide perioperative nursing care, including preoperative assessment, intraoperative monitoring, and postoperative evaluation as assigned.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and surgical technologists to maintain a safe, sterile environment and support optimal outcomes.
  • Administer medications, manage lines and devices, and monitor patient responses according to standards and protocols.
  • Document nursing assessments, interventions, and communications accurately and promptly in the electronic record.
  • Participate in surgical safety checks, timeouts, and debriefings to support high reliability and patient safety.
  • Engage in ongoing education and quality initiatives related to perioperative nursing practice.
