About The Position

The OR RN Supervisor maintains accountability for daily operations and delivery of patient care through supervising, leading and mentoring staff. Serves as a professional leader, role model and expert resource to department staff, provides direct patient care, and assists with personnel actions, staff development, evaluations and counseling.

Requirements

  • Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) within 18 months - Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI)
  • Licensed Registered Professional Nurse (RN) - Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Bachelor's Degree: Nursing (Required)
  • Intraoperative RN

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Manager, interviews and selects staff.
  • Provides input and recommendations on clinical ladders, promotions/demotions, progressive discipline and staff participation in unit projects.
  • Maintains and completes annual staff competencies.
  • Supports the Manager in collecting information for accreditation surveys and departmental audits.
  • Actively assists the Manager with implementation of the recommended changes.
  • Provides direct patient care as needed or a minimum of 2-3 days per month.
  • Provides coverage for the Front Board Coordinators as needed.
  • Supports and enforces organization standards and requirements including but not limited to, compliance regulations, fire, safety/disaster programs, and infection control policies/procedures.
  • Completes staff performance appraisals, annual staff competencies, and laddering requirements.
  • In conjunction with the Perioperative Educator, assures that orientees are provided with a preceptor to facilitate the completion of the orientation guidelines for staff and providers.
  • Recommends staff development and identifies educational needs for all roles.
  • Identifies daily staffing needs in accordance with budget and target guidelines.
  • Proactively reviews future schedules (next day, three days, and one week in advance) to anticipate the need for staffing, equipment, and supply needs and adjustments for all cases.
  • Manage and monitor schedules for changes.
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of running the department, including practice standards, staffing and quality assurance.
  • Accountable for OR suite efficiencies that include 7:30 am on time start, In-Room to Incision times, Room Turnover times, and Scheduled Case Duration Accuracy.
  • Serves as a role model and resource.
  • Assist with yearly budgetary development.
  • Reviews productivity reports to ensure appropriate staffing levels based on benchmarks.
  • Manage daily Kronos edits and perform edits for manager final sign off every other Monday.
  • Oversee staff vacation requests to ensure adequate daily staffing patterns.
  • Complete daily rounds including, patient, staff, and surgeon rounding every quarter.
  • Maintains a safe environment for patients, staff, and providers.
  • Demonstrates awareness of and adherence to safety, legal, and policy and procedure requirements established at the organization and unit level.
  • Completes audits that directly impact practice, and then send follow up e-mails for immediate feedback and if possible face-to-face education.
  • In absence of manager respond to customer service issues with patients, families, MD and all other staff.
  • Assists with investigating event reporting, patient, and staff concerns.
  • Accountable for staff and surgeon satisfaction scores in conjunction with OR efficiency and work flow.
  • Participates in various committees that may include ORVAT, Infection Control, Quality and Process improvement.
  • Provides Charge coverage for the RN OR Front Board Control Desk Coordinator when absent.
  • Makes Assignments based on Patient, Surgeon, and Anesthesiology Requirements as well as appropriate to the Skill Level of Surgical Techs and Surgical Assistants who Participate in the Surgical Procedure.
  • Liaison between OR and SPD for Trouble shooting issues with SPD.
  • Manages OR efficiency PI for 7:30am on time starts, turnover, and in room to incision metrics.
  • Communicates between Surgeon, surgical team, and anesthesia, regarding Surgical needs for patient, equipment, supplies, special items, and monitors staff needs.
  • Leads and participates in staff huddles and staff meetings.
  • Attends departmental and organization meetings as needed.
  • Reviews future surgery schedule to ensure appropriate equipment / supplies are available for all cases in collaboration with SPD and Inventory Coordinator.
  • Ability to assess needs of specialized operating room equipment and supplies for all cases.
  • Ability to update and organize surgeon preference cards in collaboration with Service Line Coordinators.
  • Communication between surgeons, surgical team, and anesthesia regarding surgical needs of patient, equipment, supplies, special items, and monitors staff needs.
  • Schedules, books, and grids cases in EMR for same day adds or as needed.
  • Ability to circulate and/or scrub various surgical procedures.
