About The Position

The RN Staff Nurse position in the Emergency Department at UPMC Altoona is a full-time role requiring night shifts on weekends. Nurses will work 24 hours per weekend, either through two 12-hour shifts or three 8-hour shifts, between Friday at 3 p.m. and Monday at 7 a.m. This is a union position, and eligible unit-based nurses can receive a 25% pay differential. The role involves providing direct patient care, assessing and planning care, coordinating with medical staff, and ensuring safety and compliance in nursing practices. Requirements

  • Minimum of six months of nursing experience required.
  • Must hold a current license to practice nursing in Pennsylvania.
  • Must satisfactorily complete the Nursing Department's orientation program.
  • CPR certification required within 30 days of hire.
  • Must obtain one of the eight specified certifications within two years of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification required.
  • NIH Stroke Scale certification required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an emergency department setting.
  • Additional certifications in nursing specialties.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care using nursing protocols and standards.
  • Administer medications and IV therapy according to policy.
  • Evaluate and document patient and family needs.
  • Reassess patients every eight hours or as needed.
  • Involve patients and families in creating care plans.
  • Coordinate with community agencies and other professionals.
  • Engage in team discussions to develop patient care plans.
  • Utilize relevant computer systems efficiently.
  • Initiate health teaching for patients and families.
  • Contribute to the education of staff and students.
  • Offer guidance and support to other healthcare team members.
  • Adhere to universal precautions and occupational exposure policies.
  • Complete annual competency validation.
