About The Position

The Registered Nurse position at UNM Hospitals involves providing direct nursing care to patients across various age groups in the Emergency Room. The role includes clinical leadership responsibilities, adherence to hospital policies, and a focus on patient safety and quality care. Requirements

  • Program Graduate from a nationally accredited nursing program.
  • CPR for Healthcare/BLS Provider or Professional Rescuers within 30 days of hire.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in New Mexico or as allowed by reciprocal agreement by NM.

Responsibilities

  • Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings, and workshops.
  • Maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with hospital standards.
  • Demonstrate a proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes.
  • Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk.
  • Work within hospital, nursing division, and departmental policies.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to implement and document individualized care plans, including discharge planning and patient/family teaching.
  • Administer medication, including IV medication, via the Seven Rights; document and communicate clinical findings.
  • Assist with special tests and procedures, ensuring proper consent has been obtained.
  • Assist with or institute emergency measures for sudden, adverse developments in patients.
  • Deliver safe direct care to an assigned group of patients as required.
  • Ensure that patient medical records contain necessary information.
  • Answer telephones and triage calls as per departmental policy.
  • Participate in orientation; upon successful completion of preceptor training, assume precepting and evaluation responsibilities of new personnel.
  • Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors, and/or near misses in a timely manner.
  • Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may 'not seem right'.
