About The Position

Reporting to the Nursing Department Director, the Registered Nurse Shift Manager utilizes the nursing process andorganizational/ leadership skills to coordinate services of staff to patients during the designated shift. Assures patientcare is appropriate to the age and developmental level of patients served. Assesses staff need for the unit, collaborates with the staffing coordinator, Nurse Director, and Administrative Nursing Supervisor to ensure patientsneeds are met. Supports Nursing Department Director on various administrative duties.

Requirements

  • Two to five years acute experience or equivalent RN skills as described for designated unit
  • Two years of emergency room experience
  • Current California RN license
  • PALS Certification
  • ACLS Certification
  • MICN Certification

  • Managerial experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Determines staffing requirements to assure safe and competent patient care. Considers patient acuity, age specific needs of patients, staff skill mix, and individual patient’s plan of care when making assignments. Demonstrates flexibility in response to unexpected changes in volume, emergencies, staffing, or schedule changes.
  • Assists the Nurse Director with employee evaluations and performance management. Utilizes observation techniques, chart review, and patient interviews to evaluate staff nurse performance and quality of patient care delivered. Assists employees to improve/maintain performance by establishing goals with measurable performance outcomes, action plans, and time frames.
  • Monitors the safety of the work environment and maintains the unit in a state of readiness with regulatory agency compliance.
  • Assists Director with schedules, time and attendance, quality improvement projects, reports, documents, and files.
  • Supports nursing director with timekeeping and verifies for accurate records.
  • Seeks and accepts responsibility for committee participation, special projects, and teaching presentations.
  • Adheres to practices for pain management with specific consideration of patient’s functional/ developmental age, gender, cultural and/or personal preferences.
  • Demonstrates appropriate use of restraints per policy and procedures.
  • Ensures patient safety by assessing and proactively implementing safety measures ie: Fall, Seizure and Aspiration precautions and following isolation protocols.
  • Provides appropriate nursing interventions. Competent in all routine nursing skills and identified unit-specific skills.
  • Demonstrates the ability to provide appropriate interventions inpatient care emergencies and follows established emergency procedures.
  • Determines the presence and type of advance directive, as appropriate. Contacts appropriate resources to assist the patient and family as needed.
  • Delegates patient care tasks to ancillary personnel based on individual competency and scope of practice. Evaluates effectiveness of care performed.
  • Assigns and provides, when needed, meal and rest periods for staff as required.
  • Accesses facility information systems to retrieve and utilize pertinent information in the performance of job related responsibilities or for the provision of patient care, such as entering orders for laboratory, radiology, or other patient services.
  • Communicates and follows the organization’s chain of command for notification of patient care and/or service issues.
  • Responds promptly and courteously to patient needs throughout the shift. Answers lights and responds immediately to requests any patient.
  • Performs physical and psychosocial assessment of patients that demonstrates knowledge and consideration of age specific and cultural differences. Modifies nursing care to meet the age specific requirements of the patients including, but not limited to: growth and development, medications, and special physical and psychosocial needs.
  • Considers the special needs of patients when making patient assignments, including patients in the immediate postoperative phase.
  • Improve patient satisfaction scores by minimizing noise levels.
  • Leadership a. Inspires enthusiasm and confidence by motivating and directing others toward a given objective. b. Develops a cohesive team ensuring maximum use of skills within the group. c. Consistently supports departmental goals as demonstrated by his/her actions. d. Acts as positive role model for employees. e. Regularly rounds on direct reports to ensure team members are supported and meet patient carestandards.
  • Delegation a. Defines responsibilities and authority limits based on the abilities of staff members, organizational needs and priorities.
  • Management a. Demonstrates the ability to manage the department in the absence of the director. b. Collaborates with physician partners to provide patient centered care to foster optimal outcomes. c. Assists with organizational throughput process.
  • Employee Development a. Evaluates employee performance thoroughly and objectively. Holds periodic discussions relating to employee performance. b. Identifies the abilities and interests of employees and encourages professional growth. Provides the necessary support, allowing employees to achieve their potential. c. Participates in interviewing perspective employees, orienting new employees, and (if applicable) disciplinary actions.
  • Supports and monitors compliance in processes involved with the patient experience.
  • Checks email once a shift while on duty.
  • Supports and meets EMTALA standards.
