Job Summary Under the general supervision of the Manager of Nursing Services, the ED or ACU RN Resident renders general nursing care, using initiative and some independent judgement, having specific and basic knowledge in the principle, methods and techniques involved in general nursing practice. The RN Resident will function in compliance with the Washington State Nurse Practice Act and the policies, procedures and protocols of Summit Pacific Medical Center. The SPMC Nurse Residency Program, utilizing the Iowa ONRP, The IONRP consist of online modules that cover many competencies research shows new graduate nurses need additional exposure to beyond initial nursing education to help them fully integrate into their practice. Examples include effective communication, time management, critical thinking, and patient safety just to name a few. Following completion of the modules you will participate in self-paced learning activities/reflective journaling that prepares you to participate in the monthly live discussions. During the live discussion you will have the opportunity to discuss and apply strategies that will assist you with fully integrating the covered competencies in your bedside practice. The program culminates with completion of a residency project. Duration of program – 1 year commitment.

Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current and unrestricted Washington State Nursing license required.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS required.
  • ACLS, PALS (or ENPC), TNCC certification required within 12 months of hire.
  • Working knowledge of nursing procedures and functions
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply age specific principles of growth and development and life stages to meet each patient’s needs.
  • Respects patient’s right to privacy, protects confidential information following HIPAA standards and maintains accountability for patient safety.
  • Knowledge of the organization, functions and activities of the nursing unit. Ability to organize and prioritize assigned work in coordination with other activities on the unit.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to read, write and speak the English language. Ability to communicate and document information accurately and legibly. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Proficient in the use of current technology, including Microsoft Office products. Ability to learn and effectively use electronic medical records and other systems and equipment.
  • The position requires lifting between 0–35 pounds on a frequent basis (approximately 30–70% of the time). Lifting more than 35 pounds is required on a constant basis (over 70% of the time). Carrying loads between 0–35 pounds and carrying more than 35 pounds are both performed constantly throughout the workday. Pushing and pulling activities are required occasionally (about 10–30% of the time). The role involves sitting on a constant basis. Standing and walking are required frequently during the workday. Bending and stooping are required constantly, while crouching occurs occasionally. Reaching and grasping tasks are performed frequently.

Responsibilities

  • Administers medication and treatments in accordance with education, experience, and with approved nursing techniques. In assisted, guided partnership with trained IONRP/SPMC RN Preceptor.
  • Provides physicians and other members of the health care team with accurate and timely information to promote continuity and excellence of care. Utilizes nursing process in the assessment, care, and documentation of care of patients. Prepares equipment and supplies and assists providers with treatment and examination of patients. Carries out physicians orders accurately and in a timely manner
  • Accurately and appropriately documents patient care and treatments including, but not limited to, medications, vital signs, intake and output. Develops and documents a patient specific care plan for each inpatient within 24 hours of admission. Demonstrates fiscal responsibility through appropriate charging of supplies and pharmacy items.
  • Provides direct patient care according to established standards of care. Recognizes legal implications of patient care by obtaining appropriate consents. Is familiar with the Nurse Practice Act and practices within that framework at all times.
  • Fosters a culture of teamwork by participating in orientation of new personnel, nursing staff meetings and in-service trainings.
  • Participates and completes special projects and other related as assigned.
