POSITION SUMMARY: The Registered Nurse First Assistant functions under the supervision of the Supervisor - Operating Room. The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is a registered nurse with specialized education. The development of specific technical skills enables the RNFA to assist the surgeon with specific intraoperative procedures that are beyond the scope of practice for registered nurses without RNFA education and training. The RNFA may provide direct care to patients using the nursing process preoperatively, intraoperatively and postoperatively. Intraoperatively, the RNFA functions interdependently with the surgeon and applies knowledge, skill, and judgment necessary to assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation that yields optimal results for the patient. Cauterizing blood vessels involves the application of energy and is a controlled act. This may be performed by the RNFA as a Delegated Controlled Act: Cauterizing. The Registered Nurse supports an organizational culture for Service Excellence and practices the Service Excellence standards to all customer groups.

Requirements

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas.
  • Graduate of a recognized RNFA program.
  • Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) preferred or will obtain within 6 months of employment and will maintain throughout employment.
  • Current ACLS certification upon hire and maintain certification throughout employment.
  • Current BLS certification upon hire and maintain certification throughout employment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills that enhance team functioning in the operating room.
  • Maintains professional manner at all times, demonstrating flexibility, sound judgment and adaptability in decision making, problem solving and team building.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills that enhance team functioning in an emergency situation.
  • Participates in continuing education programs to maintain and enhance clinical competencies related to both perioperative nursing and RNFA practice.
  • Maintains ongoing certification as a CRNFA, if applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates an age-appropriate plan of care utilizing the nursing process, clinical skills, and patient education.
  • Maintains professional behavior when dealing with issues or conflicts, utilizing appropriate resources, as needed.
  • Provides an environment conducive to safety for patients, families, visitors, and employees.
  • Assesses risks to patient safety and implements the appropriate precautions.
  • Complies with appropriate and approved standards, as outlined by the organization and accrediting agencies.
  • Complies with safety and injury prevention standards to minimize risk to self, coworkers, patients, and visitors.
  • Utilizes the concepts of the patient centered care delivery model to provide nursing care.
