About the position

Guthrie Cortland Medical Center is seeking passionate and dedicated Registered Nurses to join our Psych Services department. Responsible for delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. In addition, is responsible for performing psychiatric evaluations in the Emergency Department, answering crisis calls, and at times performing psychiatric evaluations at the Cortland County Jail. Directs and guides patient teaching and the activities of ancillary personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing. Understands and adheres to GCMC's Compliance Standards as they appear in GCMC's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy. Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and GCMC regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.

Responsibilities

  • Performs patient assessment and documents accurately in a timely manner per nursing and department policy.
  • Performs nursing admission assessment thoroughly and within timeframe.
  • Performs psychiatric, behavioral, and suicide assessments on psychiatric, medical and select inmates.
  • Responds to all crisis calls assessing nature of call and triage to Emergency Room or offer recommendations for follow-up.
  • Monitors patient as appropriate for condition, status and safety according to nursing department policy.
  • Performs safe administration and complete documentation of medications, IV fluids, and blood products.
  • Assesses and addresses educational needs of patients and families.
  • Contributes to or initiates discharge plan upon day of admission and participates in interdisciplinary planning.
  • Assists providers in performing procedures and treatments per unit, department specific and hospital policy.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and ability to safely and effectively use equipment.
  • Participates in learning experiences for orientees, nursing and ancillary staff and students by serving as a preceptor.

Requirements

  • Graduate of accredited registered professional nursing program with an AAS or Diploma in Nursing.
  • Current NYS registration/license or limited permit to perform as a registered professional nurse or graduate nurse.
  • Current BLS-CPR certification required.
  • Entry level-graduate per Education requirements.
  • 1 year of medical-surgical nursing required for ED entry level.
  • At least 1 year of medical-surgical nursing preferred for specialty units.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in psychiatric nursing.
  • ACLS training and certification within 1 year of hire.
