About The Position

Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and/or Physician(s), a registered professional nurse employed with the UT-Erlanger Neurosurgery Group of Erlanger Health System is responsible for direct and indirect care of patients, assisting physicians/providers as needed with computer entry, scheduling, data collection. All standard nursing practices and principles are used for the care of the neurosurgery patient, including pharmacology, patient assessment, and procedures documentation. This position is involved in a team-based approach to care. Team members are trained to meet the highest level of function for their role as per the State of Tennessee/Georgia guidelines. Is trained and assigned to coordinate care for patients and is trained and assigned to support patients/families/caregivers in self-management, self-efficacy, and behavior change. Is trained and assigned to manage the practice's patient population. Participates in the practice's quality management process and performance evaluation.

Requirements

  • Graduate from accredited School of Nursing.
  • Knowledge of general nursing principles and practice skills.
  • Knowledge of organizational functions, policies, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of current trends and new developments in nursing.
  • Must have 2 years of clinical nursing experience.
  • Current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Tennessee.
  • BLS completed prior to going to the unit/department and maintained going forward.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in neurosurgery.
  • Previous physician office experience.
  • Previous electronic medical record experience.
  • Previous Critical Care/PACU experience.

Responsibilities

  • Care will include, but not be limited to scheduling/screening for procedure appointments, clinical assessment of the patient, preparation for Epidural Steroid Injections; post-procedure assessment and management, and patient education.
  • EPIC ECHART Trainer for the departments.
  • Joint Commission/DNV representative for the departments.
  • Assess and care for patients during the pre- and post-operative periods.
  • Monitor heart rhythm, vital signs, pain scale, and oxygen saturation per standards.
  • Assist with procedures under the direction of EHS physicians.
  • Monitor moderate sedation, give sedation and pain IV medications, and position patients for procedures.
  • Assess patients post-procedure for mobility, sensation, vital signs, pain scale, and oxygen saturation.
  • Document according to Erlanger's standards within the pre- and post-procedure flow sheets.
  • Maintain medication and narcotic counts each procedure day.
  • Maintain emergency code drug box and equipment.
  • Test and screen patients for procedures, pulling testing and lab results.
  • Assist with charge capture and coding.
  • Review and educate patients on findings under the direction of the provider.
  • Review medication lists with patients as per medication reconciliation protocol.
  • Serve as ECHART super user for the office.
  • Assist with education on Joint Commission/DNV requirements and maintaining standards throughout the office setting.
