About The Position

Summit Medical Center is looking for a PreOp Registered Nurse to join our Surgery Team. Position is available at our Edmond hospital. Position Summary: Responsible for admitting the patient to the clinical area and providing nursing care to the preoperative patient, as well as developing a nursing care plan specifically designed for the individual patient. The staffing of Summit Medical Center is based on a teamwork concept. Employees may be cross-trained in other clinical areas and may be expected to perform duties other than their normal ones as staffing and patient needs change.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing, RN required.
  • Licensed to practice in the state of Oklahoma.
  • Previous preoperative care experience required.
  • Current BLS certification; ACLS required within one year of employment.
  • Nursing care of the preoperative patient.
  • Operation of vital signs monitors.
  • Assessment Skills
  • A basic understanding of nursing diagnosis.
  • ACLS and /or BCLS.
  • Principles of Standard Precautions
  • IV Therapy
  • CPR
  • Ability to adequately assess, diagnose, plan, and implement nursing interventions and evaluate patient condition.
  • Compliance with the attendance policy.
  • Compliance with continuing and mandatory education programs.
  • Possesses appropriate communication skills to practice collaborative nursing.
  • Ability to respond quickly, physically, and mentally when priorities and /or the patient’s condition changes.
  • Ability to read and write (legibly)
  • Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively.
  • Ability to understand and resolve simple to complex problems.
  • Ability to understand simple to complex instructions.
  • Ability to constantly walk, stand, and/or lift.
  • Ability to frequently utilize full range of motion, including crouching, stooping, reaching, bending, and twisting.
  • Ability to frequently lift, pull, push with assistance of one other person, the weight of the average patient.
  • Ability to see, hear and distinguish color.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to function independently without constant supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures the preoperative area always has a clean and therapeutic environment for all patients.
  • Ensures supplies and equipment needed are available and in good working order.
  • Admits the patient to the unit and prepares him/her for the scheduled procedure.
  • Makes initial assessment and determines the nursing needs of the patient, communicates additional discharge needs when applicable (transportation, durable medical equipment)
  • Explains nursing procedures and actions taken to help reduce anxiety.
  • Identifies the patient’s physical and mental status.
  • Monitors the patient’s medical condition and reports any significant changes to the admitting physician or anesthesiologist.
  • Assures surgical consent, preoperative test results, and H&P are in the medical record prior to the proposed procedure.
  • Reports any important health history facts to the operating room nurse.
  • Gives patients and family members emotional support as necessary.
  • Documents patient care delivered accurately in the medical record.
  • Implements doctor’s orders in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Educates patients and family.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
  • Maintains established center/departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Maintains department records, reports, and files as required.
  • Maintains and cares for department equipment and supplies.
  • Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and center-related business
  • Develops and maintains an effective working relationship with patients, families, visitors, and other center employees.
  • Documents concisely, precisely, and accurately on all records or documents as indicated by policy.
  • Participates in Quality Assessment activities as directed for the continuous improvement of patient care and center business.
  • Understands and maintains clinical competencies (general, age-specific, and drug administration).
