The Pre and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), also known as the Peri-Anesthesia Care Unit, is a critical care unit within the hospital's Perioperative Services that provides specialized nursing care to patients undergoing anesthesia and recovering from surgery or procedures. This unit plays a vital role in the surgical process by closely monitoring patients' vital signs, managing pain, addressing post-anesthesia side effects and ensuring a safe and smooth recovery before they are discharged or moved to inpatient rooms. As an RN on this unit, you will provide direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols of the healthcare organization.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing (ADN or BSN program)
  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
  • One year of current acute care RN experience in a hospital setting required for acute care settings OR licensed military RN experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)

  • Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols of the healthcare organization.
  • Implement and monitor patient care plans.
  • Monitor, record and communicate patient conditions as appropriate.
  • Monitor and document patient's condition and effectiveness and timeliness of care and/or interventions.
  • Evaluate, update and revise plan of care to facilitate achievement of planned and expected outcomes.
  • Serve as a primary coordinator of all disciplines for well-coordinated patient care.
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with approved nursing protocol.
  • Note and carry out physician and nursing orders.
  • Assess and coordinate patient's discharge planning needs with members of the healthcare team.
  • Prep patient for surgery.
  • Assess educational needs of the patient and significant others considering cultural issues and other special concerns.
  • Provide teaching and educational material as appropriate.
  • Validate and document patient and family understanding of teaching.
  • Maintain professional growth and development through ongoing formal and informal education and clinical nursing study.
