About The Position

The RN Pre-Op/PACU Coordinator is a role developed to work in coordination with the Perioperative Services Manager in the pre-op and PACU areas to ensure the work is accomplished effectively and efficiently. The RN Procedural Coordinator is the first line support for staff, physicians and other related providers on pre-op and PACU area clinical issues. The RN Pre-Op/PACU Coordinator is responsible for maintaining pre-op and PACU area supplies and coordinating with the materials to ensure all required supplies and equipment are available as needed. The RN Pre-Op/PACU Coordinator is responsible for training staff assigned to the Pre-Op/PACU area and ensuring ongoing competency. The RN Pre-Op/PACU Coordinator will coordinate the overall flow and efficiency of these area to include turnover, safe handling and transport of patients, and other tasks vital to safe and efficient care of patients. This position reports directly to the Perioperative Services Manager and may be used as a RN in pre-OP and/or PACU staffing based on surgery schedule needs and manager discretion. This is a highly collaborative position overseeing all activities in the Pre-op/PACU area and working closely with the Perioperative Services manager to ensure appropriate staffing, training, education, efficiencies, and safety in this area.

Requirements

  • Work requires graduation from an accredited Associate's Degree in Nursing, Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Must have current RN licensure in the state of Oklahoma.
  • BLS, PALS, and ACLS must be achieved within 6 months of hire.
  • Requires five years of appropriate clinical experience.
  • Candidate must be able to read, write and speak English fluently, have cognitive skills for math, reading, filing and sterile technique skills.
  • Communication skills to deal well with employees, patients, families and physicians.
  • Vision for near, mid-range, far and accommodation.
  • Hearing for low, medium, and high pitch.
  • Job requires physical ability for long term standing, occasional sitting, crouching, kneeling, frequent walking, reaching with reaching above head and below waist.
  • Job risk include exposure to blood and body fluids (high), contact with chemicals, lifting of 30 - 40 pounds and exposure to infectious disease.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and coordinate clinical requirements for staff and ensure that all regulatory requirements for staff are current.
  • Plan and assist with coordination of unit staff schedules, ensuring department is adequately staffed at all times. Providing coverage as indicated.
  • Coordinate clinical requirements with staff regarding equipment and supplies.
  • Consult with preceptors and orientees on a regular basis to provide support and determine how orientation should proceed on an individual basis.
  • Collaborate with the CNO for issue resolutions and projects to improve work flow processes throughout the department utilizing a proactive approach.
  • Collaborate with different departments (physician offices, OR, radiology, scheduling, PAT, registration) to resolve issues and improve work flow processes throughout the department.
  • Mentor/coach staff to enhance their professional development.
  • Assesses the performance of assigned new hires and orientees including entry level nurses, nursing care assistants and scrub technicians; provides ongoing feedback and coaching.
  • Understand and communicate potential clinical equipment or supply issues to appropriate team members (Materials, Safety Officer, Biomed, Sterile Processing, etc).
  • Mentor and monitor the preceptors for all new employees.
  • Provide clinical/education updates and skill check-offs to entire staff on a regular basis.
  • Provides immediate support and education on policy, procedures, equipment and supplies.
  • Responsible for learning, implementing and teaching new technology/procedures.
  • Demonstrates awareness of current problems and basic plan for all patients within assigned area.
  • Provides clinical consultation and guidance as needed to facilitate patient care.
  • Gives assistance and/or direction to staff to facilitate quality patient flow.
  • Assess staffing needs according to workload and staff competency; Coordinates with manager to re- assign and adjust staffing based upon patient care needs.
  • Delegates responsibilities within the scope of practice and validated competencies in order to meet the workload demands of the shift.
  • Facilitates assignments that support learning for the orientee or nurse learner.
  • Promotes an atmosphere of open communication that facilitates staff input into decision-making, resolution of conflict, and collegiality among all health team members.
  • Communicates in an effective, professional manner.
  • Facilitates staff performance audits and monitoring related to attitude, team performance, regulatory guidelines, and SCIP initiatives.
  • Facilitates and encourages staff participation in departmental and hospital committee and council meetings.
  • Attends departmental and hospital committee meetings as assigned.
  • Coordinates, facilitates, participates and directs departmental projects with follow-through and appropriate follow-up.
  • Other projects and duties as directed by the Perioperative Services Manager and CNO.
