About The Position

The RN, PACU position is a full-time role focused on providing high-quality nursing care to patients recovering from anesthesia in a Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). The nurse will be responsible for monitoring patients' vital signs, administering medications, and ensuring patient safety during recovery. This role also includes preoperative assessments and patient education, contributing to a comprehensive care experience.

Requirements

  • Current IL. licensure as a Registered Nurse.
  • BCLS Certification.
  • ACLS/PALS Certification.
  • Minimum two years experience in acute care setting or ambulatory surgery setting.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the ages of patients served.
  • Possesses the ability to assess and interpret appropriate data relative to age and to provide care needed as described in the policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedures performed and types and uses of various anesthetic agents.

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to the Center's policies and procedures and the Profession Standards of Nursing Practice.
  • Prioritizes actions with consultation as needed, including notifying the physician of changes in patients' condition.
  • Administers and controls narcotics and medications.
  • Accepts responsibility for patient safety and assures safe practice.
  • Demonstrates competency necessary to perform patient care.
  • Restocks area with applicable supplies at the end of the day.
  • Performs the Preoperative/PACU Nurse Duties as assigned.
  • Assesses patients recovering from anesthesia and makes appropriate judgments for nursing intervention.
  • Evaluates respiratory status to determine the need for additional intervention; inserts oral or nasal airway as needed.
  • Monitors patient continuously while recovering from anesthesia.
  • Monitors blood pressure, arterial oxygen saturation, respiration, and EKG.
  • Recognizes life-threatening arrhythmias and initiates appropriate therapy and/or assures assistance.
  • Performs venipuncture for IV restarts; mixes IV medications; administers IV medication.
  • Prepares patient for discharge with postoperative instruction and teaching.
  • Conducts preoperative interview and patient teaching either over the telephone or in person prior to scheduled surgery.
  • Confirms the proposed procedure, the date of service, and verifies the surgical site.
  • Confirms the patient's understanding of the proposed procedure.
  • Instructs the patient as to what to expect during the visit to the center.
  • Obtains health history.
