The ASC Pre-Op/PACU Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing professional nursing care for patients in the preoperative and postoperative settings. This role involves assisting physicians and staff in coordinating patient care within the surgery center, ensuring patient safety, and acting as a liaison between patients, caregivers, and medical staff.

  • Maintains confidentiality in all clinical activities and communication.
  • Admits the patient to the preoperative unit and assists with physical preparation for surgery.
  • Performs preoperative preparations as ordered by physicians and explains surgical routines to patients.
  • Provides professional nursing care in the immediate postoperative period (PACU).
  • Conducts initial and ongoing assessments of the patient's physical and psychological needs.
  • Evaluates and implements measures to ensure a safe recovery from anesthesia.
  • Prepares and discharges patients safely from the Center.
  • Maintains knowledge of cardiac monitors and arrhythmias.
  • Assists in safe transportation and positioning of patients.
  • Restocks and maintains accurate inventory of supplies and medications.
  • Dispenses medications as directed by physicians.
  • Communicates effectively with co-workers, medical staff, and ancillary departments for continuity of patient care.
  • Completes all required charting and documentation according to clinic guidelines.
  • Maintains working knowledge of emergency equipment and assists with safety drills.
  • Recognizes and acts on potentially unsafe acts and conditions.
  • Assesses patient condition upon arrival to pre-op and provides support as needed.
  • Documents all care given to patients accurately in medical records.
  • Starts patient IVs and administers IV sedation as applicable.
  • Observes, records, and reports patient's condition and reactions to treatments.
  • Handles postoperative triage phone calls and communicates with patients' families as necessary.
  • RN degree from an accredited school.
  • Current license issued by the Idaho State Board of Nursing.
  • ACLS, PALS certification, or ability to obtain required.
  • Certified in first aid and CPR.
  • Two years of professional nursing experience, preferably in a surgery center.
  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory, regulations, and practices.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions.
  • Skill in collecting data through various methods.
  • Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations and react calmly in emergencies.
  • Excellent communication skills and professional appearance.
  • Surgery center experience is preferred.
