JOB SUMMARY: In accordance with the philosophy and goals of OSS Health, and within the scope of the Pennsylvania Nurse Practice Act, the OR Registered Nurse (RN) will provide care in an atmosphere sensitive to each person's physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs. The OR RN is responsible for planning, executing, directing, and evaluating direct and indirect nursing care given to the surgical patient. The OR RN will assist in meeting the surgical patient's needs by utilizing the nursing process and ensuring continuity of care during the surgical experience. SCHEDULE: Saturdays, 10 or 12 hr shifts

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Associate’s degree in nursing required.
  • Current license to practice professional nursing in the state of Pennsylvania and familiar with the Pennsylvania State Nurse Practice Act.
  • BLS certification required.
  • ACLS certification required or the ability to achieve within one year.
  • Must be able to effectively and efficiently make use of time and resources.
  • Must be able to plan and organize work.
  • Physically and emotionally capable of performing position responsibilities.
  • Manual dexterity
  • Computer literacy
  • Must have professional and effective communication skills and be able to maintain effective communication at all levels.
  • Assumes responsibility for own personal continuing education and developmental needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing or relevant field preferred.
  • Previous experience in the OR highly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and directs patient care in an individual operating room.
  • Ensures that proper techniques and practices are used according to accepted standards of practice.
  • Supervises other personnel in the room and directs or assists as necessary.
  • Performs all circulating duties with efficiency and speed.
  • Supervises and assists scrub nurse person as necessary.
  • Positions patient, prepares operative area, and adjusts table to proper position according to standard policies.
  • Has all anticipated supplies and equipment in room and provides to team as necessary.
  • Opens all sterile packs and supplies using according to aseptic technique.
  • Assist surgeons. anesthesiologists, and other personnel as needed to ensure good patient care.
  • Maintains counts on soft goods (needles, sponges, etc.) and instruments to ensure no retained/lost items according to current policies.
  • Observes patient for changes in condition.
  • Reviews surgeon's preference cards for desired medications and verifies same with surgeon.
  • Ensures all medications are administered and charted according to established policies and procedures.
  • Identifies and records patient's response to medication when necessary.
  • Cares for specimens and cultures as directed by policy and procedure.
  • Provides orderly progression of schedule by sending for following patients at proper times and notifying charge personnel of any changes.
  • Provides report to PACU nurse concerning patient's condition and pertinent information for the safe continuance of care.
  • Assists in control and maintenance of supplies and equipment.
  • Participates in on-call/late stays rotation as required.
  • Reports unusual occurrences to the manager or designee, and files Incident Reports as necessary
  • Contributes to the efficient and productive operations of the Operating Room.
  • Other duties as assigned.
