About The Position

Virginia Urology will provide access to individualized, quality, and compassionate urological care from a highly specialized and diverse teams while maintaining a fulfilling work environment. Our Operating Room RN demonstrates knowledge of human growth and development, assessment, range of treatment, and appropriate care to the patients served. They are responsible for delivery of perioperative nursing care to surgical patients, they maintain aseptic and safe environment in the Operating Room, and perform assistant, circulator and scrub roles. This position services the following populations: adult and geriatric.

Requirements

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Licensed in the State of Virginia or awaiting reciprocity.
Demonstrated competency in circulating with a minimum of two (2) years’ experience.
CPR and ACLS certification.
Acute care hospital experience in an ICU, ER or Med-Surg or high-volume surgical center with exposure to multiple specialties.

Responsibilities

Develops a care plan that meets individual patient needs and follows established nursing standards of care/ practice and applicable Ambulatory Surgery Center policies and procedures.
Utilizes critical thinking skills in the formulation and implementation of the patient’s plan of care.
Records actions and patient response.
Potential discharge needs are identified and communicated according to policy.
Delivers care with respect to the individual’s spiritual and cultural needs.
Notifies surgeon and/or anesthesiologist of abnormal lab values and changes in patient condition.
Provides patient care in a professional and ethical manner.
Demonstrates an understanding of, and appropriately applies, policies, utilizes available resources.
Identifies unsafe patient care practices and assumes responsibility for intervention.
Prioritizes and delegates tasks/assignments based on patient needs and skill level of staff.
Delivers medication according to policy.
Verifies surgeon, identifies the patient and operative site.
Ensures that informed consent and History and Physical are present and complete prior to surgery.
Performs pre-operative assessment based on unit policy. Assessment includes, but is not limited to, the review of pertinent pre-op data; physical and psychosocial considerations and any special needs related that may impact the delivery of care during the preoperative course.
Acts as a resource person and provides direction to other members of the health care team to ensure comprehensive and safe patient care.
Advises and directs team members in the selection and preparation of routine supplies, instruments, and equipment for surgical procedures.
Opens instrument trays following basic aseptic technique policy and procedure.
Inspects sterilization indicators.
Notifies circulator of missing and malfunctioning instruments and any of suspect sterility.
Sets up instrument stand with drapes, sutures, power tools, and other instruments in accordance with the operating surgeon’s preference list.
Opens and sets up drape pack following basic aseptic technique.
Assists in draping the patient to establish sterile field. Does so in accordance with AORN standards and Recommended Practices and established departmental policies.
Provides and anticipates the needs and requests of the surgeon.
Ensures that appropriate instrumentation and supplies are readily available in the room or on the sterile field.
Diligently maintains, and is responsible for the performance of sponge, instrument and sharps counts.
Follows established policies and procedures for counts.
Informs the surgeon and other team members of any discrepancy in the count.
Completes documentation as required for counts.
Provides support and assistance to anesthesia providers as needed, specifically during induction and emergence of anesthesia.
Provides a patient status report to PACU nurse upon completion of the procedure.
Recognizes adverse responses to care or treatment.
Responds appropriately to life threatening emergencies (Code Blue, Fire/Disaster).
Communicates with patient’s family/significant others as needed. Provides any significant status change and documents appropriately.
Positions patients, provides protection of pressure points, and keeps body parts in proper alignment.
Properly prepares, handles, and documents specimens according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
Performs surgical scrub according to procedure.
Gowns and gloves self-others following gowning and gloving policy and procedure.
Participates in room turnover procedures to include set-up and clean-up protocols.
Communicates effectively with supervisors, co-workers, physicians and other healthcare providers.
Demonstrates the knowledge of the principles of growth and development across the life span.
Administration of IVCS, attendance in IVCS in-services.
Possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status.
Interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her specific needs.
Provides care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.
Maintain ACLS, and CPR certification.
Attends continuing education including but not limited to; Safety, Infection Control, Disaster preparedness, code reviews, fire safety, IVCS and MH, radiation safety and document attendance on continuing education worksheet.
Performs other duties as assigned in support of clinical excellence, operational effectiveness and patient-centered care.
Cleans equipment in accordance with established departmental practices.
Identifies and transports patients as needed, assists with shaving the operative site as indicated.
Provides in services, serves as a preceptor and provides orientation and technical assistance for staff in Operating Room.
Assists with orientation and clinical education of new personnel.
May be assigned as charge nurse according to competency validation and departmental needs.
Performs personnel assignments according to competencies and patient acuity (as charge nurse).
Schedules surgical procedure add on cases (as charge nurse).
Determines flow of surgical schedule (as charge nurse).
Supervises personnel assigned to staff (as charge nurse).
Provides patient education and documentation of understanding regarding tests, procedures, equipment and medications, as well as education necessary for the patient to meet continued health care needs.
Performs special projects as assigned.
Participates in the on-going correction and updating of physician preference cards.
Communicates changes to appropriate service coordinator.
Exhibits strong initiative, personal accountability, and ability to independently identify and execute improvement opportunities.
