About The Position

The Observation Unit is a 35-bed unit that provides acute care for issues ranging from cardiac, to general surgery, to behavioral health. These patients receive holistic care that reflect the values and mission of Carle Foundation Hospital. Patients’ goal length of stay is 24-48 hours. The unit has a nurse to patient ratio of 1:5-6. The department culture is fast-paced and team-oriented, working closely with physician partners and ancillary team members to achieve the best outcomes for patients. The unit has a robust Partnership Committee that meets monthly and includes a unit-based educator, 2 nurse supervisors, charge nurses, and a discharge nurse. Frequent nursing skills and equipment used include Foley/IV/NG insertions, nursing prioritization, IV pumps, lift equipment, SCDs, telemetry monitoring, and patient connection.

Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days from American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Licensed Registered Professional Nurse (RN) in Illinois.
  • Nursing Diploma.
  • Minimum of 1 year of RN work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all responsibilities and duties required by unit as specific to the scope of service.
  • Implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice.
  • Maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team.
  • Completes initial assessment upon patient admission and develops appropriate plan of care in accordance with unit standards and that is based on patient and family needs.
  • Implements plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures.
  • Modifies plan of care based upon continuous evaluation.
  • Takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents.
  • Communicates with others directly and in private when necessary to resolve issues.
  • Offers constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers, and confers with colleagues to expand knowledge base.
  • Identifies own learning needs and takes initiative to begin appropriate solution.
  • Fulfills all requirements of departmental competencies.
  • Assesses IV sites every 4 hours.
  • Starts new IVs per Carle policy.
  • Maintains documentation standards as evidenced by passed quarterly chart audits.
  • Attends 5 out of 6 staff meetings per year.
  • Identifies change in patient status and responds appropriately.
